In the past I have used these soundtracks
Aliens
Bladerunner

once on a primitive planet I played music from Conan the Barbarian.

For Secret of the Ancients, I recorded the "music" from Forbidden Planet (dont have the soundtrack)

Military campaigns or just because there are Solomani involved
Starship Troopers

Stereotyping am I? Shamelessly.

I don't use music in my gaming sessions as it often disrupts the session and it wasn't ideal in a club situation. However, I do have music going on in the background when I'm doing my Referee planning, ship designing, trading and all those other solo activities you can do in Traveller.

My preferred soundtrack is classic multi-synthesiser ambient music, usually performed by a European keyboard wizard: Jean-Michel Jarre, Klaus Shultze, Tangerine Dream, Kraftwerk, Kitaro and the like.

I tried mood music for a D&D campaign I ran several years ago. I have too many musicians in my family. They all got distracted. :)

Cheers,

You have to pick music that's mostly music. Too much vocals will be distracting. I prefer progressive trance myself for that. Almost totally music, a bit bouncy / energetic that keeps everyone a bit more alert too. Not too loud and dial some of the bass out. Don't let it overwhelm things.

Sample what I would use at: (It's free and this isn't some endorsement)

I like the prog / tech channel.

When I say musicians, I mean classical orchestra -- cello, violin, viola, bass, plus orchestra directors. Not just family, but our friends too.

It isn't the vocals that distract. It's the rhythm, the melody, the key signature, etc. When you are trying to run a combat and two of your players have their eyes closed and are conducting ...

Well anyway, no music for my games. :)

Everyone has to march to the beat of their own drummer...

I think this is another one of those polls that must've been broken during a code update, because the usernames listed for each option do not match up with the corresponding numbers at all. :p
