Naval Unit Symbology

In a previous thread, William pointed out that FSofSI had iconography for ship symbology:

Given the blank icon for, say, a cruiser, how would you modify it to represent a specific type of cruiser? For example, Strike, Heavy, Light, Armored, etc.

T5 has weapon and sensor icons, so these could be used inside a symbol to denote a primary weapon or mission, like a Missile Cruiser.

I'd go with having the hull number at bottom left of the unit type to show the specific ship.

For permanent units, I'd go with the following scheme:
-Central Symbol is the major role of the unit
-Name would be along the lines of CRUDIV 117, or SIEGERON 17.
Commander in command, two vertical lines (Division)
Captain in command, three vertical lines (Squadron)
Commodore in command, X (Group or Capital Squadron)
Rear Admiral in command, XX (Force)
Vice Admiral in command, XXX (Numbered Fleet)
Admiral in Command, XXXX (Named Fleet)
Fleet Admiral in command, XXXXX (Theater).

I drew heavily from USN practice, except for the uppermost echelons. It gets kind of hazy there. There is not much of a standard for naval organization, aside from everything gets task organized per deployment in blue-water navies, it seems.

I'd say use the Zhodani Base counter generator, pick an icon that is closest to it's physical appearance, define the Imperium-like combat values, then define it's functionality by ship type. The circle option could be used to designate streamlining/refuel ability or other criteria important IYTU.

You could also use the class name line to define jump capacity or further your criteria agenda.

I've considered putting the ship or class name centered under the symbol.

I like your ideas for units. In the case of individual ships, I've been toying with the idea of designating size this way:

Code:
⊘	Small craft < 100 tons
●	ACS, 100 - 400 tons
●●	ACS, 500 - 1000 tons
●●●	ACS, 1100 - 2400 tons
❙	BCS, 2500 - 4000 tons
❙ ❙	BCS, 5000 - 10,000 tons
❙ ❙ ❙	BCS, 11,000 - 24,000 tons
x	BCS, 25,000 - 40,000 tons
xx	BCS, 50,000 - 100,000 tons
xxx	FCS, 110,000 - 240,000 tons
xxxx	FCS, 250,000 - 400,000 tons
xxxxx	FCS, >= 500,000 tons

I was thinking of putting the mission code ("CA", for example) at the upper right, and maybe a jump number in another corner.
