Mongoose is changing so many things willy-nilly that it's making the "official" universe resemble a GM's tweaked version home game.

Yeah, but its like its being homebrewed by a really excellent GM who knew just what to change! :)

I love CT. To death. My favourite RPG bar none. I still write stuff for it.

But Mongoose Traveller (MgT or Modern Traveller as it could also be called), does it just as well. And is in print. Lots and lots of print.

You make it sound like CT isn't in print. (The CD-ROMs. The Big Floppy Books. The dual-statted T20 supplements and adventures. BITS supplements and adventures. Etc.)

That's weird, I asked Mongoose Matt if the HIWG material would be considered at all and he indicated no.

Mike

Why is that weird? The HIWG material has always been pseudodeutrocanonical at best... It's like making a new Star Trek series follow fan fiction.

Don't get me wrong... there's good stuff, but you have to either know what you are looking for, or be a diligent searcher.

I wouldn't expect Mongoose to even look at it, much less use it.

That all being said, sometimes it pays to look at the material, as it occasionally makes sense of the illogical. But you have to be a canon completist to even start on that.

I agree on that. Starting to use HIWG material this late would probably just give more headache than it os worth. In many cases it can be pretty difficult to track down owners of certain documents that may hold interesting stuff. Some of them may not have played Traveller since MT was released.

And there is a certain satisfaction to nkow that the material that has been written is mostly your own and not copied, lended ot stolen from someone else.

I don't see the point of working in a shared universe if you're not going to build on what others have written before you. To me half the fun is fitting my ideas into an existing setting (Provided, of course, that said setting makes sense -- if not, it can be very frustrating ;)).

HIWG has never been a "part" of the shared universe, except for what was taken up into canon.

Nor is my webpage, nor yours, nor even Jeff Zeitlin's... It may be good stuff, but until one or another edition's published material, it's all not but hot air and electrons.

Nothing new. Nothing that you can just go down to a FLGS and buy.

If that's the standard, MGT isn't at my local FLGS either.

Heck, most of my FLGSs are drying up. I live in one of the largest cities in the US, and I have to drive 25 minutes to hit a store with any selection at all. On that trip, one is rolling the dice whether the latest MGT publication will be there or not (I wouldn't bet on it).

Colin,

Guess where I bought my Big Floppy Books... ;)

Me, too. BTW.

Really? I've never seen them in a game store. Before I moved, the city I lived in had at least four, and none of them ever carried them. But fair enough.

I'm not going to get into an argument with anyone over the merits of MgT vs. CT. It's far too subjective, and thus pointless.

(Yes, what this conversation needed, a new voice)

That is more a sign of the economy than product quality. With the web making it easier for someone to just snag a copy on line and shorter and more efficient supply lines, it is less expensive for shops to order what you want rather than paying for copies that might sit on the shelf.
Any store owner would much prefer not to pre-spend money to make a sale unless the traffic at the store justifies it. So if your local shop is not stocking a game system, it is because the foot traffic for that game, over all, is not hot.

Hell, in the 80'd my store did not even stock GDW Traveller! That made pre-internet collecting much more difficult.

I do realize that there are separate camps over the changes but this is not a sign of product quality. I have bought all the MGT stuff for reference at the very least and my local shop does not even buy an advance copy for me. I have to order it.

Marc

MGT = Just a GM's version of Traveller.

Not real Traveller.

MGT = the official, licensed published version of Traveller.

What Supplement Four plays = just a GM's version of Traveller. Not real Traveller.

Get over it. :nonono:
