New to the board.

Greetings fellow Travellers, Shadow Shack here. My initial attempt at an account was killed so naturally I had to create a few more in chargen until I got one that survived (opening with a bit of Traveller humor there ;) ).

I played for a few years in the mid-80's but never owned any of the books save for Suplement-7 until now, that infernal free Starter Set at DriveThruRPG was my gateway drug to acquiring LBBs on eBay so now I have a lot to digest. For now I'm concentrating on Books 1-3 until I'm ready to stretch my GM legs.

Naturally I dug out my original character from the 80's (I'm a pack rat, I keep everything), good ol' Torc Raven VII (7 term scout), a seventh generation adventurer following his six forefathers who died during character generation.

Welcome aboard. Feel free to ask questions, even it they might sound a bit basic. I go with: The only stupid question is the one not asked.

Welcome to the fora: there are a great number of very (all)-Traveller knowledgeable and helpful folks here, but if you're starting with Starter Traveller (ST) and the 3LBB's you may want to start in the Classic Traveller (CT) section here. There are tons of useful threads just within it.

Welcome to the boards. Sucker :p

Seriously, so many of us had a 20 or 30 or so year hiatus and then rediscovered this great game. Happy Travelling!

After the first rush subsides you may want to check out farfuture.net for the digital reprints of pretty much everything Traveller.

cheers

If you are interested in completing a ruleset collection and don't mind PDFs, Marc Miller's site Far Future Enterprises (FFE) ( www.farfuture.net ) sells complete collections in PDF, all on CDROM for very reasonable prices as well.

Add yet another welcome aboard! As mentioned, there are a large number of conversations - set the "show last 45 days" or range at the bottom to longer to see the older threads. There is a LOT of good stuff in here.

I highly recommend this as well: in addition to getting a wealth of original material for a very reasonable price, you're supporting Marc directly.

Y'know, pushing a Scout through seven terms under CT... maybe you shouldn't be surprised you tend to lose a few in chargen? ;)

QFT. FFE is the best and cheapest place to gather up any Traveller rulesets and most supplementary materials, without getting gouged paying collector prices on eBay. Plus, you have the satisfaction of buying direct from Marc Miller, one of the primary creators of Classic Traveller and provider of this discussion site wherein we now, err, discuss.

Exceptions not available on FFE are GURPS Traveller and Mongoose Traveller. GURPS Traveller is no longer in production but is available as PDFs from the SJG (Steve Jackson Games) website. Mongoose Traveller is the other current branch of Traveller (along with T5); I bought mine in PDF from DriveThruRPG, but I assume it's available other places as well, and also in printed form.

Oh yeah, since Marc has released some aspects of the Traveller rules under Open Gaming License, there are also some free or pay-what-you-want versions; Cepheid Engine is one that I know of, but I expect there are others. Cepheid Engine is available on DriveThruRPG, and has a couple fora here on CotI.

On behalf of Marc, myself, and the Staff, Welcome!

I'd like to know more about the "attempt at an account was killed"... via private message.

So, you finally found your way through jumpspace here! How delightful (for us, he thought sadistically as he typed).

No druids here, but there are space rangers... and the occasional space dwarf.

Cepheus Engine has a few different versions: the full-up SRD (which is mostly Mongoose Traveller 1st ed. with some inspirations from CT), Cepheus Light (closer to CT) and Cepheus Faster than Light (free framework). If you're a tinkerer and want to cobble together your own version of Trav the first two come in editable versions.

Wow this is an active board...which is both surprising and a welcome sight to behold in this day and age of instant gratification social media. Awesome!

Thanks to all for the welcome, I'll answer a few of the responses ---

Definitely interested in the CT section. Thumbs up!

If you are interested in completing a ruleset collection and don't mind PDFs,

Call me a grognard, but I prefer original copies even if they are used/abused and beat/complete. They fit right in with my high mileage D&D and Star Frontiers books I bought new back in the 80's. ;)

Seriously, after downloading that gateway drug from DriveThruRPG in November, I've acquired up Books 1-8, Supplements 3,4, & 9 (in addition to my original 7 I already had) and a couple of adventures. More than enough for when I can finally stretch my GM legs.

Nonetheless, I have the FFE site bookmarked.

LOL yeah, the first ones made it through one or two terms each before croaking so when I was getting some traction I rolled with the momentum. Having seen the actual rules some 30+ years later I can now see what a feat that was with the highest-of-all-six-classes 7+ survival roll!

No need for a PM...that was just my sense of humor kicking in. You know, hot on the heels of those aforementioned six Torc Raven attempts. ;)

Hey, a fellow Dragonsfooter!

We have a lot of lurkers...

Feel free to dive in. Lots of stuff in the backlog; posts go back before 2004...

Necro isn't prohibited, but don't necro just to say "Kewl!"... many times, the original posters are not active.

Also, while not well linked to from the BBS...
the Wiki is at wiki.travellerRPG.com
There are a few hosted tools at www.travellerrpg.com/tools/

The community is great, but remember - some of the core userbase have been here for almost 20 years.

Aslan in comfortable shoes, the feasibility of piracy in the 3I, and the Near-C rock debates will raise some hackles...
