OT: my copy of Full Thrust has arrived

Enoff

SOC-13
Just got home from work and the package sitting at my door was from GZG. My copy of Full thrust has arrived!

It's fast, fun, easy, and capable of requiring multi-level strategy.

I got into it through the B5 RPG's Earth Force Sourcebook (Grab it if you can... it's quite worthy, fully compatible, and has some additional nifties, like the various races fighters are not identical... and counters which give a great base for use with FT if you dupe them, and an additional drive type, plus a range of really good ships).

I hope 3rd ed comes out soon... and includes the additional weapons types from EFSB.

FT3 is in development, and has been for some time. Of course, the same crew are also working on FMA Skirmish to introduce a skirmish game into the mix and an update and modernization of Dirtside II. So we have no shortage of activity. And of course, I think some aliens rules for Stargrunt (which may be the long storied Bugs Don't Surf or something else) are also in process.

If you enjoy full thrust, I think you want to look into Power Projection: Escort as well as it is based off of FT if I recall correctly.

IIRC doesn't the Full Thrust fleet books semi-upgrade the rules and provide differing class of ships for each ship type? Almost FT3 but not quite.

FT's a great fun game. PP:Escort and Fleet are complete (as in all you need is PPE or PPF to play) Traveller mods of Full Thrust and Fleet includes ways of converting Traveller ships to the game. Only thing it doesn't really do is RPG scale combat as FT ships blow up real fast.

Yes, they do, casey, yes they do.

FB1 adds new movement rules, and changes from a 4 arc to 6 arc, open ended ship designs.

FB2 adds 3 races, with new technologies.

FT3 (some might be in a conjectural Fleet Book 3) should feature things like:
- all the rules in one place (not scattered over several books)
- designs for the ORC, Japanese, New Israeli, OUDF and UN ships and their associated new systems
- fixes to the badly broken fighter rules
- some other fixes and errata
- some other options perhaps for movement systems or the like

FT3 is sort of like the Fleet Book books tidyed up, with some fixes and new systems. It'll be nice when it finally gets completed. The fighter/PDS/ADFC issues especially will be nice to have sorted out (when the final decisions ever come down...)

Anyway, have fun! There are lots of FT links on the web, even a full thrust webring.

Adopting the fighter rules from EFSB can radically improve the use of fighters; it includes CSD patrols, and variations on fighters by race, and shooting fighters with beams.

Shooting fighters with beams is only a partial solution. It makes some designs too good against fighters and it isn't enough to deal with the Soap Bubble Carrier problem. (Trust me, we've seen the math many times...)

Still, in the EFSB world, you'll see fewer home-brew ships I think and balance problems are less notable in the world of 'cascading threshold critical failures' or whatever they call it where taking your first threshold can also be your last....
