Power plants and vehicles

OK, I just got told that an EP for vehicles is not the same as an EP for a starship.

I just grabbed my numberwheel and get :

TL7 fission plant, 4.28 tons, 1000 vehicle EP
Cost 1.32 MCr.

TL7 space ship fission plant, 2 tons, Cost 6 Mcr, 1 SS EP.

so, I will take a volume equivalent as it seems to me that the prices are in the wrong proportion.

4.28 / 1000 x X = 2 / 1

1000 / (2 x 4.28) = X

X =~ 116 EP

A starship EP = 116.82 vehicle EP.

Same one for price :
1 vehicle EP costs 1.32 Mcr / 1000 = 1.32Kcr.
a starship EP costs (with a vehicle drive) = 1.32 * 116.82 = 154.20 Kcr

I think it seems logical for me to build my starships with vehicles power plants.

Let's see how much will cost 1000 vep with a starship drive.

6 Mcr / 116.82 = 51.36 Kcr.

[ edit : 6 Mcr = 1 SS EP as 1 SS EP is 116.82 V EP then I forgot to multiply by 1000 ]

Wow it's cheaper.

Why bother using non-starship drives in vehicles ? (Apart from the size factor)

Think about it, if my vehicle is big enough ie. a tank, why would I use another fission drive than a starship's ?

Or on the other side, why the x3 factor ? vehicle fission power comes as 3 times more expensive as starship power ???

Does not make any sense !!! (Again

BTW is FFE&S more logical ?

[ Well... Conlusion goes the other way around, as building a starship fission plant cost WAY more than what my original error induced. I would then do the opposite which way easier...

Why bother with a SS fission drive when the vehicle one is so cheap AND do not try to tell me the SS one is safer as who would care to take risks with a nuclear core on planetary surfaces, starships on the other hand costs a lot of money and only kill their passengers if the core melts]

FF&S is a little better integrated but so different from CT/T20 as to be incompatible without some work. The design system changes the dynamics of combat, travel, trade and more. So, sadly you can't just drop it into a T20 game as the design system before doing some other work, and then you might as well be playing TNE

Same goes for MT though it's a lot closer. I seem to recall the design sequences scaling much better there so maybe it would be a good reference for figuring some of it out for T20.

I think T20 was trying to strike a difficult target of easy to use and lots of detail, and fit it all into one book with all the rest of the rules. A noble quest but not an easy one.

A good point is that I just loath the T2K ruleset.

I has driven me off of a lot of GDW games.

And I must admit that I am not particularly in love with the MT ruleset neither.

So, which MT book cover the SS design ?

I have checked my basic ruleset (which is the only part I currently have) and did not find anything.

Hmm, should be there, depending on your definition of basic set. It starts on pg. 56 of the MegaTraveller Referee's Manual. There were also some expansions in the Traveller's Digests covering Wet Navy and some other designs. It's not an easy system to work with in the old pencil and paper fashion but there might be some spreadsheets around if you can find them.

Gaaah, did not try the referee's :/

Don't know where I put it, not in the boxed set. and not on the shelf...

Bah, I'll try to find it again.

I think I will use published designs and forget about the funny stuff.

On top of that we haven't got any word from Hunter, not even a it's in the works guys.
