Howdy! So I'm just beginning to put together a Traveller campaign for my group of D&D players who are getting burned out on fantasy and want to do sci-fi. I got the T20 PHB and I sat down last night to monkey around with character creation. This is not my first experience with the Prior History character creation system. About 10 years ago I created a Traveller character and was shocked at how little control I had of his development. I wanted a classic naval officer: a highly skilled leader with a distinguished record. I don't remember exactly what I ended up with but it was much different from my imagination.
I'm sure this is a very common experience among Traveller players. I loved the fact that Traveller characters aren't first level but have a history. I love the fact that randomness comes into play and bad things can happen. However, knowing my players they're going to belly ache and moan if the dice go cold during the Prior History rolls. I'd like to add a mechanic that allows them to re-roll or modify rolls, but not altogether remove the possibility of bad things happening. Does anyone use something along those lines? Maybe 2 re-rolls, have to keep the second roll, or a pool of points the player can use to modify rolls up or down?
Thanks!
