Programmable Calculator Software

Is there any interest in Traveller software for programmable calculators or are laptops the tool of choice these days?

If so, what would the target audience be, Casio 7400, 9850, FX 2.0 series or the TI-82, 83.....89, Voyage 200 lineup?

HP48G would be my target of choice.

I'm not sure that any of the programmable calculators would be a good interface for the "build-it" kind of program I would be most interested in. They should be reasonable interfaces for die-rolling level programs though.

Joseph,

Thanks for replying.

HP48G - A highly regarded calculator from the research I conducted recently.

Looked at HP but opted to replace my rather disappointing Casio CFX-9850G with a Voyage 200, I quite fancied the QWERTY keyboard, and the HP49G+ looked so powerful it was scary :)

Showing my age here but, seeing that now calculators are powered by CPUs previously found in the desktop computers of my youth, I figured they were up to doing something quite useful these days.

When you say 'build-it', are you thinking 'High Guard' design as an example?

I was wondering about programs to automate trade and commerce, High Guard combat, stuff that you need within a game play session itself.

Thunderbolt:

I would have thought that some little JAVA based stuff would have been a good bet. Could run it then on mobile phones. Be a fair way to pass the time commuting on trains and might have a slightly wider audience base than a specific model of calculator.

In terms of programmable calculators Casio FX-7000G. Yes TB that is the same one I bought in 1986!

My research so far suggests that the Casio lineup, starting around the time of the FX7000G (which I still have too!!!) will work through the later models right up to the FX 2.0 Algebra model.

Similarly (although Amazon haven't delivered my Voyage 200 yet), my understanding is that TI-Basic programs can be written to be compatible with the TI-82/83 series upwards to the Voyage 200.

My understanding is that the TI line up, is particularly strong in the United States education system so reasoned that it was a better target platform.

Phones on the other hand are diverse, constantly changing, and in my experience, flakey and slow.

Of course, there are PDAs to consider as well....
