Real Star Map into Traveller Map

Has anyone taken our real star location and turned into the 2D hex based traveler map?

I did a while back for a TL9~10 game I ran with Earth as the center. But it didn't go that far and I only had about a dozen star systems.

Curious if there is such a beast that anyone has done....

Also check out CT: Alien Module 6: Solomani Rim. It notes the canonical locations of several real stars.
 
I'm retiring soon, and hope to find the time to learn how to make 3D star maps using Campaign Cartographer 3 and the Cosmographer add-on.

Some of the sample maps are the same as the 3D ones on atlas of the universe.

I have been told (and have seen examples) that AstroSynthesis is really the way to go for 3-D star mapping. It is on my wishlist, but has so far not risen to the top of the list at any time that I had money available for it (about $40, I think). Kilgs really knows a lot about it, if you want somebody to ask.

Second this recommendation for Astrosynthesis. I have the earlier version and it is fantastic.

When you get it, set route distances to 7.7 lt yrs, as a limit. This is the stutterwarp limit in Traveller 2300, as I recall. You get a nice constellation from the nearby stars, with Sol, Alpha Centauri and Barnard's forming an isolated triangle, while Barnard acts as a gateway to the larger mass of stars.
 
Profantasy had a Astrosynthesis promo. I think I bought it, but cannot find it. version 3. I'll dig around on my extra hard drives and see if I can find the install program again.

Does the planetary data match to Traveller UPP's? Or is there more work needed to be done?

If I go with a 3-D starmap system, I'd want to dump in as much current real data as I could, then have the program make up stars to extend that outward if necessary, plus make up planetary systems for all stars, then allow me to edit to customize to my heart's desire, then add names and notes to developed systems.

Can Astrosynthesis do that?
 
In the Astrosynthesis download section, somebody has added the Hipparcos near star catalog. This is the current latest-and-greatest star dataset made by astronomers. You can import this into Astrosynthesis and instantly have all the stars at your fingertips.

Then you can start adding your own stars at the rim of known space.

Thanks! Next time I have money for a gaming purchase, it will probably be Astrosynthesis. Looking forward to working on some old ideas for an ATU, and I think it will work better in 3-D than on classic hex-grid sector maps.
 
I didn't see a way to save them, nor find where if anywhere, it put the planets that FT3 generated. Other than that, I like it so far.

It's still work in progress, but I've turned the real local stellar neighbourhood into subsectors 9 parsecs thick... here is Sol (with Terra still at hex 0207) - I've included the subsectors outwards and inwards from the galactic plane as well, so there are three stacked on top of each other (the shades of the star disks indicate which level they're on - white is the top layer, galactic north from Sol; purple is galactic south, and blue is in the same subsector as Terra/Sol).

I've marked Jump-1 routes with solid green lines, and Jump-2 routes with dotted lines in orange/red. For clarity, not every route is shown especially on the more distant layers - I don't normally "stack" the subsectors but this does show the possibilities for travel better.

The "map" is 27 parsecs thick - the number next to each star is its layer in its subsector, counting from the bottom (the "first floor").

A star's position within a hex is arbitrary, because I used standard places within the hex for each "storey" to avoid too many overlaps. They're in the "correct" hexes but I don't want them 'realistically' distributed within that otherwise I'd use Dr Ganymede's light-year grid (which I did anyway before converting to jump hexes).
