well, the personal development table is one way... referee bias is another. My system is to pick a race and and job, and just work out with the ref what seems reasonalbe. I.E a Wookie Merc would have High STR and END, low Dex, since he is so big, and so Gun skills, like laser rifle-2 and autopistol-1, and maybe Vacc Suit-1. It is easier and more fun than the random, military only generation. I am 14, and have a similar story, so if your son has any Trav Specific questions (for CT of course, it sounds like that is what you are using) i'd be glad to help. Endersig@netscape.net
Also, www.Freelancetraveller.com is a GREAT source when it comes to easy starter missions.

I also quit playing in the 80's and have recently broke out all my old stuff. You can also play online with others throughout the world, or run a LAN party with the GRiP system. If you The traveller edition has a dice roller program, character generators, ship construction program, and the traveller edition also has a reprint of the books 1-3 combined in one book. In addition, it also has electronic versions of the orginal Kiniuir adventure and Research Gamma, which you can customize for your own campaign.

I just recently purchased the program and found a few bugs in it, but overall it is a good program. The GM is the only person that needs to buy the program and you can download player versions for free under "free downloads" at this site.

If you are interested in playing via the GRiP system let me know. I am working on a campaign and hopefully will be starting it out this weekend.

As Endersig points out, the personal development table gives social status increases for some careers (Navy is one, there is a politician type career in Citizens of the Imperium too). Some careers also get extra social status increases through the mustering out rolls.

Good luck playing with your son. I run a game for my son and his friends (when their schedules allow anyway - I don't remember being that busy when I was 12...) and it's great fun - it's almost like when roleplaying was new all over again...

Hope it goes well.

Cheers
