Second Imperium SuperBattleship

Dispersed Structures are designations for things like Truss Supported designs where everything is fit onto a truss-like structure without regard to defense or armor. It makes it a very cheap design, but not real good for fighting. Carriers might use that design.

Yours is definitely a close structure.

Check 'em out.

Redesign includes redefinition as a 'close structure', introduction of factor-7 armor at the expense of vehicle/craft bay space (from 10 to 7 2kton cruisers, etc.). Left some room to reclaim more craft crew, etc. Thoughts?

Now with all of that...How about some "background information" to this monument of the late 2nd Imperum?

Like this...

The Ominous-class Dreadnaught, built at the zenith of the 2nd Imperium -1794 weighed in at an unheard of before 200ktons, and carried seven light cruisers, and a swarm of fighters and small craft.

Built on Hub-Ershur (0504)/ Kerr(A)/Massilia Sector, the 2nd Imperium's new Capital, the Ominous class was to be the new symbol of the Imperial Navy's might and power projection across the conquered stars, and sovereign territories within it.

Solomani ship architectural innovations like varying gravity planes within the ship, as well as Vilani-style missile bay arrays meshed together in the mega-starship seamlessly. The latest technology was utilized in her design, from a meson screen, to early repulsor bay weapons. The rotating weapon's disk was perhaps one of its more unique features, sporting also the back up "Battle bridge".

Despite severe cost overruns, the prototype dreadnaught Ominous was completed in 4.3 years (-1789), and saw her trials at the Depot at the Color System (0301)/ Kerr-A/Massilia Naval base six months later (-1788).

Unfortunately for the Ominous-class before mass production could go into effect, and after only four models had been completed by limited production, the drain on the Sector's economy and the effects of the rapid (in the Vilani's eyes "over")-expansion of the Solomani Imperium came back with the collpase of the 2nd Imperial credit. Hulls for eight more of the class had been laid, but were abandoned in the advance of what became known as "The Long Night" (-1776).

Four of these 2nd Imperial dreadnaughts were completed, the ISS Ominous; the ISS Fore Shadowing; the ISS Impending Doom;and the ISS Dire Portents.Three of these class are accounted for by History:

paragraph.gif
ISS Dire Portents & ISS Impending Doom escorted a massive convoy of refugees from The Imperial Core to trailing into Ley and Gateway Sectors before being lost. ISS Dire Portents was discovered in the mid 800's in the Gateway region, badly damaged abandoned in deep system near the Glimmerdrift system of Saga's End (2209)/ B/ Glimmerdrift. From her recovered records it was learned that her sister ship had been lost to the "Dead Space" phenomena region.

paragraph.gif
ISS Fore Shadowing & Ominous were part of an evacuation convoy back towards Terra. Only the former vessel survived the journey, and was still utilized as a non jump monitor when the Sylean wrought Third Imperium recontacted the Solomani Rim Autonomous region.

The fate of the ISS Ominous herself has never been solved...

<Agog>
Oh.My.Word.

That is one helluva ship, people

Just a couple of notes though:

USP
Numbers for batteries and batteries bearing could be hexi-deci-whatsit, i.e. the "11" under the 4 for Lasers could be "B" and the "16" could be "G" (tidies up the USP);

Armor
This puppy can be armored up to Factor-12 under CT:HG (I'm assuming TL-12 is the prevailing TL, given it's 2I, yaddahyaddah) without losing way too much in the way of dTons. *However*, the MT constructed version might differ, due to using TL-12 superdense armor and the differing hull armoring calculations. I've hit this problem trying to "cross-build" a ship between CT:HG, MT:RM and T20 (my advice: don't do it unless you're preparded to put the math in or know someone that is willing). Just some thoughts to go in the pot ;)

I'd be interested to see the tonnage tallys for the CT:HG and MT:RM workups on this design.

Gruffty - in CT:HG, bringing the armor up from 7 to 12 would cost an additional 20000 tons (10% of the total), from 32000 tons of armor to 52000. That's too much internal hangar and fuel space lost imho, and taking 25% of the total tonnage for armor seemed out of balance.

BTW - here's a dump of the tonnage stats, etc. from the high guard spreadsheet.

Pretty cool story, Liam.
Please go on with some "Adventures on the ISS Ominous"...
Well TE, that would depend on how much you wanted to tip your hand to the players for which the original premise for 'Ominous' was designed as for an adventure finding her...

however.. ;)

ISS Ominous while she passed on into legend, a tribute to the height & might of the 2nd Imperium, she became to those particular academics, the Solomani Empire Era Archeologists the largest of the remaining "unicorns" missing from the period, the 'Holy Grail' of her time period.

The Imperial University at Core/Capital & the Solomani Imperial Museum of Historical Studies of Terra/Sol Rim of the 3rd Imperium's interest in finding her had waned after re-uniting with Terra's Solomani Region, and the discovery of the ISS Foreshadowing's data cores had been exhaustively reviewed of her arduous path from upper Massilia Sector to the Long Night Polity of the Terran Trade Commonwealth (better known to present-day scholars as the Solomani Confederation).

The backtracking of the trail, wherein the last known reference point both vessels were together was in crossing the stellar thin Blight Subsector of Diaspora in their rimwards trek with their convoy of refugees. Both vessels with approximately thirty-nine other vessels remaining of their refugee convoy jumped out of the Torngat system (2023)/Blight-K/ Diaspora in late -1775.

The only thing that could be ascertained with any certainty was that when the ISS Fore Shadowing exited Jump at Iselu (1826)/ Blight-K/ Diaspora (an isolated system reached only by jump three from any direction or greater) with the remaining vessels of the convoy and her escorts, ISS Ominous was not among them (circa -1775).

Fore Shadowing's path afterwards led her to Ebekhar(1628), then St Denis (1630)/Iusea-J/Diaspora before zig-zagging rimwards to next Waverly (1733)/Madoc-O/ Diaspora then back rimwards again to Semaachi(1433)/Shumidisi-N/Diaspora, the across the Cumber Main rimwards into the Sulieman Subsector of the Solomani Rim Sector, at jump two thereafter.

Interest flared up briefly again in the mid-800's 3I, when the wreck of her sister ship ISS Dire Portents was found adrift by an Imperial based exploratory merchantman out of the trailing edge of Ley Sector in the Glimmerdrift at Saga's End system (2209)/ B/ Glimmerdrift), as it came to be know thereafter, and the fate of her escorting sister-vessel known as well.

Once again, ISS Ominous' fate came to the fore front of the Imperial Historical societies of the previous era. Imperial & Solomani Jump Space scientists have postulated that had she merely come out of jump prematurely, even her onboard fuel reserves woulkd have with lowberthing at 1G speeds, would have emerged at a crossing speed of some 40 years a parsec.

Given the distance and time, and the known direction of travel from Torngat it would have taken the ISS Ominous 240 years to reach the Hewlitt system (2031)/ Madoc-O/Diaspora[/b], or about circa -1635; or 280 years (-1595) to have reached either Ruffian (1933)or Waverly (1733)/Madoc-O/Diaspora.

Intensive academic sponsored & Naval searches along the great Blight gulf of Diaspora yielded little until 212-1107 when the Free tradesman SS Tebirocamon recovered what they claimed was an ejected sandcaster turret in escape-pod mode with the uniformed remains of a 2nd Imperium Junior Naval officer aboard it in the (GM's insert system of choice here).

Authorities have claimed the turret and body for "authentication purposes"; the Skipper of the Tebirocamon has filed a claim for the reward offered from the Imperial University Department of Solomani era Antiquities (A sizable 25MCr)...

Be she a 'Flying Dutchman', or jump-mishap victim like many other vessels during that time period remains yet a mystery. Whether or not the Imperial University honors the reward of this band of Free Traders also remains to be seen.

Hows them apples? ;)

Well, Thank you TE.

'Thought an expensive piece of work like this fine ship ought to have had an impact in Trav history. Toss in some jump data, extrapolate a possible path from Massilia-A to Terra in Sol Rim-K, and figure out where did something go horribly wrong.

For flavor, I tossed in an adventure seed with the claimants and the rewards. I'm pleased you liked the piece sir.

(Heretic's Grognard Disclaimer note: I do not allude, nor say this ship-class was the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back" of the 2nd Imperium's economy. Things like it, and from over a long period of time prior to it, certainly affected the Long Night's onset however.)

yours in service to the game we play & serve,
Liam Devlin

Youre very welcome.

And I am still curious for a pretty set of deckplans and other visual details of such a vessel.

Think of another free trader crew marooned on suc h a giant, silently drifting in deep space, with no(?) more living crew, but some subsystems still working...

Regards,

Mert

I like the backstory pity that it is only forms part of the story...

Because right in the middle of Deadspace, they found something. They took it on board and after a few scarring battles - they misjumped at full Manuever Drive capacity fleeing.

The coordinates and vector took them smack dead into a comet as it was exiting the system and would not return starward for a 950 years. Repairs without a shipyard. Impossible.

A fateful decision was taken. Abandon the ship in the comet and take one of the cruisers and try to find a friendly port, as they were right in the middle of unknown space (Gateway Sector). The fate of the crew after that point is unknown.

However, what they took on board is still there. Waiting to be discovered.

Yes, of course, you're quite right - 25% of dTons is very much on the high side and I see your point.

BTW, which CT:HG spreadsheet are you using? The one I've got has "bugs in it, Mr Rico, millions of 'em!"
