Ship design/Space combat - pros and con with the different rules sets

For me, the board has been useful more often than not, since I seldom stop at two units, and 3 defines a plane. (at 4, one could define in three d...)

But, by the same token, the gains for 3D are far less than the added complexity is worth.

I can understand using a 1D board, but you probably won't catch me doing so.
 
Ad Astra used a 3D board with a couple of their games. Very pretty, and interesting to play with just one or two vessels, but it was a lot of work to track.

I reckon 2D works fine as a compromise between playability and a realistic environment.
