Ship types

You mean the "type S", "type A", "type A2", etc. designations?

If I recall in the first printing of LBBs there were no "type" letters, but I could be wrong.

The basic "types" are in the second printing of LBBs and the "type" list is codified(ish) and tabled into a primary and secondary in High Guard.

I say codified(ish) because even then (again all iirc) it is explained that they may be in any order (primary first or second and secondary omitted or first or second), the tables have empty slots (for ref customization?) and it is explained that the codes listed are not complete but only the most common (unless that came later, in MT maybe).

The HG list is pretty much cribbed from the 1980 US Navy code system. My Bluejacket's Manual (17th Ed) has an almost identical list, with a few extra to boot!

And what are the few extra to boot (besides submarine boats etc?)

Auxiliaries of various types. K for collier. Don't have it to hand, but did a side by side comparison when I first got HG.

Does that list help distinguish between Destroyer Escorts (Trav) and Escort Destroyers (Fighting Shits of the Shattered Imperium)?
