Marc got a quarter of a million for T5...

If I ever win the lottery i will buy out Mr. Sanger and give the stuff to Marc.

If I win the Euro Lottery jackpot I'll buy out Marc too ;)

Then T6 can be mine

You're talking gross numbers, right. Out of that comes the cost of publication, from buying the art to printing the book. I image Marc's profit was much less.

Absolutely true. Also, we know nothing. It's not our business. He could have funded the T20 cdrom, and other "in scope" activities, from his business plan. He now has a product line full of new T5 items.

It's not ours to assume or judge. That being said, I am not too wild about spending $100 so that I don't have to pay $65 for a magazine or two. It defeats the purpose.

I would just like to show people that there is interest through this poll.

This is a serious canon question for the community.

No, it isn't.

The ONLY person who actually gets to say what is canon is Marc Miller. Not even Rob and I get to make those calls. And it certainly isn't the Traveller community (for example, ask the "Traveller community" if the TNE virus is canon).

That being said, since Marc did approve this, I'll post my answer to the question, "What is Traveller canon?"

1. It is, at any given moment, what Marc Miller decides.
2. Marc reserves the right to change his mind.
3. The GURPS Traveller universe (GTU?) and the Official Traveller Universe overlap; exactly where they overlap is questionable, depending on who's asking the questions.
4. The precedent of "mostly recently published source" applies, unless that newer source is wrong about something; no canon source is perfect.
5. Never, ever assume that current licensees are not canon; rather, current licensees are always canon, unless they print something wrong.
6. Marc decides who is wrong.
7. There's no order to the six rules above.

No, it isn't.

Read the entire thing Don.:D

I have stated many times on this thread, that this is a "request" for CDROM or Downloads of the out-of-print DPG material!! Or even a canon change.

That has been stated over and over and over. Please, read the first post. And a few others.

If you'd like to make the poll block bigger we might be able to put details in our polls.

I also state over and over again that Marc has the authority it's his products...over and over and over.

It is getting hard to "help" the Traveller community.
Please, read first. Please.

I did read the whole thing.

After I got an e-mail from someone asking when this CD would be available from FFE...

Yes, I had not read this topic until someone jumped the gun thinking this was discussing a real product that would be coming out from FFE.

So that probably affected the way I read the thread...

I clearly stated it's a request for products. It's actually an effort to help you and Marc in your discussions with Roger. I am a DGP fan.

Of course, I have no idea how much $$ Roger has involved in this. :)

We seriously could use a better poll layout on the home page or a sign that says "READ FIRST"

Let's put it this way. If you really want to blame someone for the way Rodge feels about Traveller...

I'll put forward the name of Courtney Solomon. :CoW:

I was no longer in correspondence with Rodger by that point.

I was no longer in correspondence with Rodger by that point.

Huh?

We're talking about the Director who did the Dungeons and Dragons movie? That Courtney Solomon?

The plot thickens. What did Courtney ever do to Roger and Traveller?

Courtney Solomon acquired Imperium Games back in the mid nineties. The company wrote a stack of T4 supplements.

Sounds like it got really messy.

Any story I would tell would be about Rodge trying to get a license from Imperium Games (ie, Mr. Solomon). The stories from folks who did work for Imperium Games are probably even more messy, and from our perspective they were on the inside. Mr. Solomon's interactions with Rodge and I largely amounted to "no movie interest for Traveller, so no licensing rights", my trying to work around him and talk to Marc directly, and a lot of confusion.

I had already started on the timeline (which is why I have the title DGP Archivist), and I had started obsessing with MegaTraveller errata (because of DGP), but hadn't realized anyone else would be infected with that obsession yet.

Really, all I wanted to do back then was start a Traveller fanzine. At that point people were already posting nasty things about Rodge, and he saw no need to put up with it, didn't think anyone would care about his side of the story, and was done with Traveller.

I'm still pretty militant when folks insult Rodge. He was a nice guy who thought he was doing Joe Fugate and Traveller fandom some good. He thinks I should write for Pathfinder.

Sorry for the thread hijack.

For what little it might be worth, I did some looking into the story of Mr. Sandler and DGP as a result of this thread (it just made me curious). What I found agrees with what you just posted about Rodger Sandler trying to help Joe Fugate. From what I read, Joe had some sort of family crisis and needed money fast, so Rodger bought DGP from him so Joe could focus on real life.

Forums and RPG communities tend to paint individuals as angels and demons, so it is always helpful to be reminded, every now and then, that we are all real people with real lives. Mostly just trying our best to get along in life and have some fun along the way.

So, DonM, if you happen to talk to Rodger some time, give him my best wishes and a 'tip-o-the-hat' for stepping up and helping Joe.

This part I disagree with. I for one would love to see a Traveller movie. I would love to see a Traveller miniseries similar in scope to "Game of Thrones." With the right script, I think this is possible. The OTU is full of great stories and adventures, just begging to be put on a screen.

I am unsure

Are you thinking of something like Firefly meets the Imperium?
Or
An exploration of the Imperium by those co-opted into the system?
Or
Something else entirely different like from Star Wars to the Rebellion?

Either way I would also support a Kick starter to help fund a DGP production project.

And, in the interview on these very forums, Joe says that he was "done" with Traveller. He realized that he wasn't going to get rich by being a third party supplier, even if many thought (and still think) that DGP's material is the best among its peers.

Either way, DGP was going to stop publishing for Traveller.

But, it is a shame that all of that wonderful DGP material is not available in an omnibus or CD-ROM.

Traveller movie rights:CoW:

Mr Solomon's track record was not too good...or at least in the long run. Also, even Joss Whedon was not happy about Mr Solomon's theatrics.

5+ years later Joss does Firefly.

I had just finished reading "Traveller 1248- Out of the Darkness-Sourcebook 1", while watching "Game of Thrones" season 3. I can almost see a multiseason, galaxy spanning epic starting off with introducing Dulinor, Lucan, Strephon, maybe some minor characters, and playing out the story of the entire rebellion.

But failing that, I am sure there are a ton of shorter stories for one shot movies, on the big screen. GK Beowulf?

Come on. From the Kickstart he claimed he only needed about $25,000 to do T5. I imagine, from Marc's own numbers, that his profit was pretty serious. Like, given his numbers, NINE TIMES $25,000.

If there is something less than accuracy here, I'm not the one misleading anyone. Marc's numbers, Marc's profit. (And the "Swag" was included in the initial Kickstarter offering.)
