My long held opinion is de-canonize it. Realistically it will never see the light of day again but by keeping it as canon we tie future writers hands with a part of canon they can not access.

As I understand it, they can access it as long as they paraphrase it.

Can't paraphrase what you haven't read.

Which is why it would be nice to have a "Complete Works of DGP" CD-ROM, regardless of whether the material is ultimately kept as canon, becomes "semi-canon", or is altogether de-canonized. It would still be nice to have easy access to the material, just as with FASA and JG publications.

That's a problem that solves itself. If no one around has a copy, who's going to care what it says? Contrariwise, if there is someone around that has a copy, he can tell you what it says. This is especially the case with official products: if the editor doesn't have access to a copy, he can't insist that a writer stick to a canon he doesn't know, and if the editor does have a copy, he can tell the writer what to stick to.

As regards to establishing a common frame of reference, the alternative is to achieve a consensus without having any canon to beat other people over the head with, and good luck with that. As regards to what an editor demands of a writer, well, that's not really within our power to decide.

Marc still views DGP as canon; this isn't a public debate. There are canon elements that many writers may not own. And things get missed that sadly everyone owns and looks at almost daily :(

It is a debate whether we should ask Marc for a "new view" on Canon for T5. So far the majority would like to keep DGP which means 40+ people would request Roger, Marc come to an agreement on any outstanding products. It was ground breaking for it's time.

Please, explain further so we all understand. Your insight is very enlightening.

Yep. Completely agree. I was reading two last night. It would be great if everyone could read them. Also, since we all dislike copyright infringement having downloads or CDs is the only option. I suppose they could become free wiki options. Didn't ask that question.

Here's where I disagree. While I do see the advantage of releasing limited setting books for old Milleux, I would prefer for T5 to start the clock forward again, past 1248. Others have their opinions, but I've now said it publicly: I want the OTU to move forward.

That being said, I think I've made clear in other places that I like playing in the ATU Lorenverse.

When writers are writing in the OTU, Marc has Rob and I (and others) aid with insight and making sure they have access to some of the more obscure items if needed. One of the reasons for releasing the various legacy core books on the T5 CD was to give T5 buyers access to the legacy core books (because there are Traveller fans who aren't familiar with the LBBs).

Don't. I'll have them removed. Rodge's IP cannot be on the Traveller wiki, because it doesn't meet any of the criteria that Marc or I have for permission to use the DGP materials.

I hate to be harsh like this when it comes to things like this, but Marc has made his position on the DGP IPs very clear: NO deliberate misuse of Rodge's IPs.

As I mentioned, I don't like copyright infringement either. I would assume that if Rodger gave his IP permission for free distribution of the TD magazines on the wiki. It was a suggested alternative if he doesn't want them on CDs. I made the sentence too brief.

I did not know you were interested in the Lorenverse. Thanks for letting us know. I still think there is a lot to write about in the Golden Age.

What is the status of the Lorenverse as far as IP? Does it all belong to SJG as developed in GURPS Traveller books, or does Marc also have rights to explore the alternative 'verse where the triggering events of MegaTraveller never happened?

I have not studied GT IP. I admit I only have a few GT products. I considered using GT, but backed away.

I would assume Marc has the rights to develop anything he'd like. However, isn't the Lorenverse without the Rebellion? DonM is suggesting T5 carry on post-2048 or in the Lorenverse. If I understand clearly?

Yes, and that is what I like about it. Never did like any of the "tear down the Imperium" stuff after Strephon's assassination.*

The main GT rulebook even does a sidebar nod to "Dallas" with Strephon waking up from a horrible dream... :D

EDIT: FN *: Although ironically, Hard Times is one of my favorite Traveller supplements, just haven't found the right setting to use it in - NOT the post-Rebellion collapsed Third Imperium!

I am an avid pro-Rebellion, TNE timeline ref. It requires some adjustments to the background. But that is another thread.

DGP material can be used in many settings and should not be dismissed.

Yes, and No. Don doesn't know what the rules might be...

For the past two years, I've annually pitched a proposal at SJGames. I'll prepare another one this year.

Before T5, my preferred Traveller setting was: CT/Mega rules, Lorenverse setting.

With T5, I like T5+House rules... and either a post-1248 or Lorenverse setting.

I'm speculating in those sentences as to what I'd like to do.

As far as what I know is happening: Mongoose continues its Golden Age efforts (there are a LOT of things in the wind -- if even half of them actually come to fruition, it will be a good Mongoose year). T5 has a number of things going (Cirque is going to the printer, Marc IS working on errata again (the short nap may be over), etc). There's some non-Mongoose and non-T5 stuff out there.

Oh, and I should point to excellent third party Mongoose stuff: SPICA (I want Naval Architect!), Zozer (Does he just invent cool settings off the top of his head?), and 13Mann (If you don't have their Robot book and their 1115 Spinward Marches map, you are NOT a Traveller collector).

2014 might be the year that the Mongoose 3rd-party guys become their own force in Traveller. They certainly have potential.

DGP is gone, but they have left a legacy that will not be forgotten.

I guess my 3 boxes of Traveller stuff does not constitute a collection (not including pdf purchases). I have a couple more buys to make.

The 1115 SM map is cool but not my type of wall art. I have original Traveller art. The pro spin on new products is great.

However, the majority wants to peacefully request DGP pdfs (CD or download)

I would also like to add Clement Sector by Gypsy Knight games.

Not just because I write for the ATU, but simply because I think it is about the best out there.

I probably need to steer people back to DGP product discussion instead of promoting/advertising modern third party products.

This about getting a historic product into an available formats.

Yeah. Nothing ever gets done in under a year with Traveller. We all know it.
But with a couple weeks of voting left the majority would like to see such a product.

And see, this is where I am confused. What does "voting" on a topic like this accomplish?
