CT Only: Soldiers

I've got the Deneb Sector (and a few other sectors), but they were published in a DGP magazine for the MegaTraveller era. So, I'm not sure if that is relevant to this discussion.

I count one of Mirriam, a TL A world.

One on Efate, a TL D world.

One on Persephone, a TL A world.

One on Junidy, a TL D world.

One on Katarulu, a TL B world.

Five Imperial Way Stations for the entire Sector.
Look at the number of regular Imperial Army units on the map at the start of the FFW, and that is with the deployment to Efate that had been ramped up over the last couple of years.

Remember the Spinward Marches are a frontier and they were intended to be a mercenaries playground. My contention is that the bulk of the Imperial Army is in adjacent areas, and that the bulk of the Imperial Army is actually recruited from core sector worlds rather than natives of the Marches.
Ex-Army characters that have an Imperial Army background are a bit like Roman legionaries mustered out in a far away province.

Going by the late Roman model, the British Empire, and modern volunteer armies, recruits tend to come from the outskirts and economically depressed areas.

You mean like the economically depressed worlds in the Imperial core sectors that can produce a steady stream of colonists for the Marches...
In the unemployment insurance program, high population worlds have successfully used the colonization project as a means of reducing unemployment over the long term.
Ideal Army recruitment grounds.

Troops for the imperial army

Available disposable manpower is the resource. Each world has a certain number of battalion sized units proportional to its population. There are tables for this in the JTAS. Some units stay home, aka the army to defend the planet. Garrison duty, internal security, law enforcement, disaster relief, national guard, protection versus incursions vargr, sword world, zhodani, aslan, what have you. Some manpower and cash/taxes are siphoned off to support larger, more sophisticated, more expensive imperial units. Everyone must offer the emperor their required levy. These citizens are shipped off and trained, indoctrinated and serve in imperial army units. They are equipped at imperial standards. Book 1 draft and enlistment odds are predictive on the relative abundance of who gets in and how long they stay. With dice rolls you get a lot of 22 year old army captains (mint green company commanders) skilled in things like rifle, smg, tactics, ATV and air raft. Basically cheap mechanized infantry. They are forward observers and occasionally medics. Artillery and heavy weapons really had to wait for Mercenary. Not many with Vacc Suit 2 for battledress. So our combat rifleman doesn't appear to have TAC missiles nor FGMP-15s either. I hear the imperial marines snickering in the background, but they are clutching cutlasses and revolvers, so they can shut the F up. Book 1, LBB has definite impact on the disposition and composition of "imperial" forces. Of course, as always your mileage may vary.
