The planetary government of Trapezus in the Solomani Rim had originally desired to take part in the Perseus Project, but was unable to allocate the necessary funds due a rebellion of the local indigenous race. The revolt took almost twenty years to suppress, by which time all of the ships participating in the Project had already left Confederation space. Nevertheless, in order to regain lost prestige in the General Assembly, as well as create a new focus for the battered planet’s population and stimulate the local shipbuilding industry, the government decided to conduct its own exploration to rimward. Construction of the 6,000 ton Base Ship, the Comneni, began on ________. The ship’s first flight was in _______, and the ship was scheduled to leave Trapezus on _______. The ship is to be accompanied by eight pathfinder and twelve survey ships, each of 200 tons. The smaller ships will range from the route of the Comneni, returning occasionally to the Base Ship for personnel exchanges and resupply.
The Comneni technically has a cargo capacity of almost 1,000 tons, although much of this space is taken up with recreational facilities, workshops, and laboratories. The remainder of the space is filled with provisions, trade good, spares, and other items. The Comneni, unlike the pathfinder and survey ships, has extensive redundant systems, including a backup jump drive (factor 2), maneuver drive (1), power plant (2), bridge and computer (2). The ship carries four small launches, three lifeboats, and a fifty-ton shuttle. The ship has 24 staterooms available for scientific personnel, each of which could be occupied by up to two people.
The pathfinder ships have sufficient fuel to travel six parsecs without refueling. They are intended to jump into new systems, perform a basic survey, determine whether fuel sources are available, and return whatever information is gathered to the Base Ship.
The survey ships will follow the pathfinders and are used to perform a more detailed survey of individual systems. The ships have a crew of eight and will generally have between two and four additional scientific personnel. The ship carries a small launch to provide a further means of investigating items of interest in the system. Both the ship and launch are outfitted with missile racks, which are often equipped with exploratory drones rather than weapons.
All of the ships involved were built, as much as possible, with interchangeable components. For example, the survey and pathfinder ships use identical jump drives and power plants, and all of the ships were constructed with the same computer system. Although spares are carried for the smaller ships on the Comneni, it is anticipated that some of them may be have to be salvaged for parts during the course of the journey.
Several colonization groups have petitioned to accompany the Comneni. Thus far, two ships, both of them converted merchantmen, have been approved. The Virginia is carrying 2,105 Solomani refugees from the Imperium and the Scoggins has 462 members of a pastoral religious cult on Caprice aboard. All of the colonists are in cold sleep. It is anticipated that they will be revived when the Comneni finds an especially suitable world for each of them to settle. The Sinop, a colonization ship being built on Trapezus, was supposed to be part of the expedition, but construction delays will prevent it from making the Comneni’s scheduled departure date. It is uncertain at this point whether the Comneni will continue as planned with the Sinop following as soon as she is able, or whether the entire expedition will be delayed. It is hoped that the colonists from the Sinop will establish a forward base, enabling the Comneni or one of its planned sister ships to reprovision during future expeditions.
The Comneni will not travel directly to rimward as the Perseus Project has already surveyed in that direction. Rather, the intention is to head in a rimward/trailing direction. The Comneni is carrying provisions sufficient for a thirty-year journey.
