I like the idea of different color backgrounds depending on the use(r) of the flag, but IMTU the Solomani flag (not symbol, just the flag) is a black field with the blue sphere of Terra in the center, flanked by Earth's Moon to the left and Mars to the right, with the letters SCS (Solomani Confederation [of] States) in gold, one on each of the planets from left to right.

I like the Blue design...and that could be a motiff for the Pale Blue Dot in the cosmos that the Solomani eventually call home (note no capitalization). One faction of the Solomani, I see as being very Earth-centric but others would have loyality to the concept of cultural distinctiveness.

Much as I hate the Solomani portrayed as:"Nazis in Space" there were many other "races" that were assumed to be Aryan or Nordic enough to meet the Nazi profile. So it is with Confederation...what constitutes Solomani is always hotly debated. Does the Geneered menchen from Eta Bootes count as Solomani...it better if the industries that fuel the Rim's power.

Back to the issue of the standard...Traveller has yet to develop an extensive heraldry. So, maybe the blues, reds would carry special meaning as they do in heraldry. Conversely, there would be a flag of State and a State flag. But, this problem belongs to a separate thread of its own.

I like the green one because green has a primal association with earth and life, and for the type of Solomani Culture I use in my games, which make Nazis and the like look like choirboys by comparison to anything that is not human, It's ususally a green flag with a gold or white Earth Symbol on it, or some variant of that. Green also has a Traditional Solomani militaristic association to it.

For ships, I like a bare metal hull look, with a single wide green stripe with the Solomani roundel in white with the earth symbol black or green.

I like the blue one. With the wreath it evokes the UN symbol, and its colour suggests both the UN flag and Earth as seen from space (the "pale blue dot"). The combination of references to the UN and the astronomical symbol for Earth resonates strongly, IMO.

As for the green and red ones, if you prefer those colours I would suggest combining the design of the blue variant with your chosen background colour. The white disks don't do it for me, and the "Earth" symbol needs to be a bit heavier, graphically.

If you pursue the line suggested by British ensigns, you might consider the blue version for official/government use, a variation with a red field instead of blue as a military standard, black for a naval ensign, green for private/citizen use etc.

I too lean towards the blue.

Has anyone but me noticed that in most SF, only Earth people were egotistical enough to fly a flag with their planet's continents displayed?

Slightly off topic: was it Perry Rhodan's universe where Earth people were the only ones to join their galactic federation without revealing the coordinates of their home planet like all other members had to?

it doesn't have to be, and they don't have to be, and I don't know how the solomani came to be associated with nazi's anyway, except as a convenient template. the imperium doesn't strike me as being all that freedom-loving itself.

Hi,

probably due to that racial superiority thing and the police state, you have to be a member of the solomani party to participate in politics and aliens can't join, plus your neighbour could be an informant (monitor), so probably best to shop them first. Not exactly the nicest place in the world to live especially if you aren't 100% solomani,

Kind Regards

David

My version of the Solomani flag. Green and Blue are Mother Earth's colours, and Mother Earth's astronomical symbol is superimposed.

Alternative flag, using Sol's symbol (I prefer it over Earth's symbol as Earth's symbol is too similar to symbols used by the KKK and some Neo-Nazis as a stand-in for the Swastika).

Viva Solomani!

And unfortunately saddled with all "that" baggage. It's bad enough the Solimani have this jackbooted Nazi thug image, we don't need to encourage it by adding swastika's all over the place.

But, perhaps the "earth" symbol could be tweaked a bit.

The 'baggage' you mention is ridiculous, in a proper historical perspective of the 'sunwheel'.
Saying it's a 'Christian' symbol and is 'even more burdened' by that logic.
'the symbol of two crossed lines is a 'cross of jebus' and only that. it has been that for more than two millennia (historically inaccurate, I know but I'm trying to make a point), and therefor it is only a 'christian' symbol.
The Sol-wheel is present in many cultures across the span of human history, and the idea that it has a "permanent" taint due to a couple of decades of misappropriation by yes, admittedly, some of the most egregiously evil bast**ds in recent Terran history, is an idea that needs to be let go.
The choice of symbol is valid. Any 'baggage' that's being piled on it because it kinda sorta looks like another, different symbol that has 'corruption and evil' associated with it is just silly, at this point.
the only way progress happens is by acceptance of facts. to allow voodoo thinking to 'taint' the sun-wheel is a pretty nasty bit of tangled, retrograde knee-jerk non logic. I encourage you to consider a long term, fact based historically valid perspective to help you and your players move past this unfortunate association.
Sent to you with love, peace and a sense of brotherhood to all Terrans.
To any and all moderators- I'm NOT being 'political or 'religious' here. really really not. not flaming or trolling. Just trying to encourage a mature intelligent conversation between sophonts and help alleviate confusion and misinformation. shying away from a logical discussion allows the sort of 'well meaning censorship under a kinder name' that afflicts many things. It's a hard call, but I felt I needed to take the risk of the banhammer to get involved. I truly hope you understand what and why I felt the need to address this painful issue. I would welcome a PM discussion to explain further, if you feel it's needed. RefZero

Blue, which I now see is the overwhelming majority choice.

Those who voted for other choices to have names taken and reported to local Party secretariat! Damn revisionist brownite splittists - it's their fault we never achieved the five year plan targets!

Blue, which I now see is the overwhelming majority choice.
The poll originally referred to three specific suggestions posted by Andrew Bolton. One of which had a blue background, one of which had a green background, and one of which had a red background. So the poll wasn't about what color people thought the Solomani flag had but which one of those three they liked best. (Note that it's is quite possible that a poll about what color the Solomani flag has would have a similar result).

Sadly, the three flags are no longer visible, so the whole poll is moot.

Indeed

I also voted Blue
(I was thinking of Earth as "The Blue Marble")
