Aluminum Falcon
White Ship Can't Jump

The Chromium Rodent
Heart's Desire (a group's first custom starship that they actually purchased)
Here Boy! (my ship when I played a pirate hunter that was assigned to enter Vargr space)

I assume that most of these are merchant ship names. I guess that I lean to the more traditional ones. Mine are more likely to be names of historic ships for naval ships, and for merchants, it varies between historic names and names more reflective what the ship is doing.

The Far Trader in the novel that I am working on is called the Roving Jester. A research ship is called the Endeavor of Space, while a well-armed trader for the Vargr area is called the Rodger Young.

I was thinking they'd work best for small adventurer class starships owned or leased by independent operators. Military ships would have different names like "Endeavor" or "Annihilator" or be named after heroes and planets. Line merchants would be more like "Star of Regina" or "Mora Queen". In other words, no fun at all.

I take a que for merchants from practice here.

Fornast Massif V
Poseidon Star
Daichi Kaisu
Handel's Shamrock
Ling Star 6
Cygne

For warships I think something along the lines they are called here is appropriate:

Revenge
Emperor Stephan

I agree with you there. It would be interesting to see how players in a game would react to an armed Free Trader named after any of the following:

People:
Edward Teach
Bartholomew Roberts
Long John Silver
Henry Morgan
Israel Hands
Jean LaFitte
Jean Bart
Piet Heyn
Jack Sparrow
Ann Bonny
Mary Read
Roche Braziliano
Henry Avery

Ships
Alabama
Florida
Shenandoah
Sumter
Golden Hind
Queen Anne's Revenge
Hispaniola
Adventure Galley
Black Pearl
Bon Homme Richard
Nautilus
Centurion
Duke
Duchess

or maybe one called "Letter of Marque"

Might need to give that one some thought for ship encounters.

Hi

Now that's just asking for trouble at customs... :)

That kind of reminds me of a license plate I've seen here in Northern VA that reads "IM INCNT". It always makes me wonder if the driver of the car would recieve any extra attention from the ploice if they ever got pulled over for anything?

Based on talking with some friends who are police, yes, a license plate like that is going to get a little bit more attention if stopped for anything.

I'll admit to a certain amount of pride in the name I gave to a 5000-ton passenger liner IMTU: ISS Elegant Interlude.

Or for smaller ones

SDB 7
GB 51

Whilst they may be on the official ship lists as 'SDB 7' and 'GB 51', the crews will have given them a name, and corresponding nose art.

SDB 7 (patrolling the Aslan border) "Here, Kitty Kitty!"
GB 51 (requires more minor maintenace than the rest of the squadron) "Rattlin' Rita"

Recall the proud history of bomber pilots naming their aircraft, and take a note from that:

Lady in the Dark
Ain’t Miss Behaven
The Big Noise
Delta Girl
Deuces Wild (for a plane whose tail number ended in 222)
Duchess of Fubar
Frivolous Sal
Lady Jeannette
Passionate Witch
Sky Wolf
Smokey Liz
Memphis Belle
Hustlin Hussy
Super Mouse
Ack Ack Annie
Borrowed Time
Little Patches
Jezebel

(You might detect a trend there. Folk who spend a lot of time in harms way a long way from home tend to spend a lot of time thinking about ... umm, relationships.)

Following up on that, there are to two B-29s that dropped the bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasake, the Enola Gay and the Bock's Car. Then there is Robert Scott's Old Exterminator.
