Mert, in the words of that recent song "Woo hoo!". Very nice work, obviously a productive white Christmas.

We've been sweltering down here, and I'm in the middle of a career change, so being less productive. But it is amazing seeing how far things have come on this project!

THANK YOU for all your hard work, even if it is fun for you to do ;) .

Andrew/Mert, can I host some of these on my website? All credit given of course!

(sigh)
You guys kill me!
These models and fly-bys are awesome! I work in AutoCAD all the time at the office. I have only a very little 3D studio experience.
I have several ship designs in CAD and I REALLY want to model and render them! What software do you use and is it compatible with CAD, 3D Max etc? I'm an Architect, so I design my ships with all the elevations (front, back, top, bottom, and each side), complete sections both cross and longitudinal, and I enlarge some details to make sure there is enough head room for instance when descending a loading ramp etc...

On the plan of this really cool ship, my only advice would be to draw a cross section of your floor plans, then developed the elevations from that. Because this is a flattened saucer design, you might find "more room" as the hull tapers to its extreme edge. You could use this a fuel space and free up some of the odd shaped fuel areas in the center of the ship. Just a thought. :)
Great design by the way!

BTW, I can't view the "star port" scene on my windows media player. Something about not having the correct decompressor. :-(

Hi folks !

Falkayn, at first good luck for Your career change.
Well, now that we modelled and animated quite a bit around (which is at least Your fault) I got the rising impression, that I am really tied to the boring part of IT :(
Perhaps somewhere is a job dealing with software engineering/configuration management and 3D stuff ?
But the show must go on.

Jak, AutoCAD was my CAD starter, too, but I had to do boring construction drawings of machinery and tankage areas - not much place for real 3D modelling.
What kind of rendering program would You like to use for Your work ?
At least the DXF format is quite interchangable, but importing just pure (ften fragmented) meshes is quite a pain for texturing/rendering.
And thanks for the construction hints. As I use CC2/CG for deckplan design and RealSoft3D for modelling there is a kind of break in the design sequence.
I planned to work "Your" way several times, but always fell back to the "dirty fast and easy top down" way.

Regarding Andrews fabulous starport scene I guess You just have to install the newest DivX-Codex.

Regards,

Mert

Coming along nicely, Mert.

Two small problems:

- the fill light is too bright (especially on the planets)

- the jump bubble seems to be forming too soon.

Most impressive!

Fascinating to see the design process in action. I think not enough of us apreciate how much skull sweat goes into designing things like this. Munchkins usually just want to blow it up, anyway...

By the way Andrew, I couldn't get any of the old links to work. Planning on restoring them sometime?

By the Power of Mordor, I command thee.... ARISE!!!!

'I liiiiive, masssster!!!'

Anyway, I posted my designs for the Speculative Trader and Modular Scout over on Waves in the Black and some kind soul has done some stats for use with the Serenity RPG:

Since you asked nicely for Serenity Stats for the Speculative Trader, I checked the thread link out, & here is a rough draft of it, I tried to stay faithful to the concept while converting it to fit in the 'Verse. Be warned, like in Traveller, this ship ain't cheap...

Anyway, I changed the laser turrets to cannister firing railguns for defense, & the Sandcasters became missile racks firing jammer warheads (if you read the rules, good old CT Sandcasters are considered to be in that weapon classification) This ship is a real credit sucking machine, but theoretically should be able to fetch premium prices by being able to travel in the more dangerous rimward areas. I would also rule that the Sandcaster racks may not fire any other type of missile except for the "Sandcaster" round, thus making it a legal option for merchant shipping...
For those who are wondering, Honu is Hawaiian for Turtle...

Wo trader far from it

1st I would like to say traders would never arm a ship with pulse lasers as it is primaily a offensive weapon, not defensive in any way.

160 dtons for cargo would be to small for a size of 800dton trader. Trading ships are built to take as much cargo as possible.

Nor would they take a laboratory.

Looking at the design it would be more suited for the role of a Exploration military class vessel able to adapt to required needs in war time, whilst being able to defend its self from smaller Military vessels and could also be used as Freighter escorts acting as if it was a free trading vessel till its close enough to fire.

The deckplans are too big.

Which really means that the deck plans do not match the actual design parameters for the ship itself, not vice versa ;)

I have to wonder however. Which takes precedence over the other...

A deck plan whose "count the squares" determination of displacement tonnage, or the ship design specifications (ie design parameters)?

Players usualy interact more with the deckplan than the stats in my experience.

I'm sure the specs are right.

The original comment referred to my model - I (unthinkingly) based it on the deckplans, so it's too big.
