Welcome to the new COTI server. We've moved the Citizens to a new server. Please let us know in the COTI Website issue forum if you find any problems.
We, the systems administration staff, apologize for this unexpected outage of the boards. We have resolved the root cause of the problem and there should be no further disruptions.
I must have been thinking subconsciously of the Judges Guild Traveller logbook. Didn't they publish some D&D journals also? I think someone mentioned something like that in a prior post.
In all this, nobody has suggested that one of the logs would be a plain old journal-style log - think of the "Ship's Log" or "Captain's Log" style of entry from Star Trek, where it's essentially a prose description of what's going on.
It might be a voice recording, as implied from Star Trek, it might be transcribed to hardcopy and stuck in binders, or it might be written out longhand - and other positions than Commanding Officer might keep similar official prose logs.
Not to mention all the "personal logs" that J. Random Crewmember might keep...
I'm currently writing out some thoughts on Stewards, and just last night wrote up a section about how they contribute to the ship's log about passengers, ship's locker inventories, the ship's accounts, and so on.
In my head ( and IMTU ) it makes sense that the crew keep logs and contribute to the general ship's log relevant to their positions, but also the idea that there are ongoing personal narratives as well, for example like we saw in "The Martian."
Don't just think of ships but believe it or not truck drivers keep logs. In there case it is mostly a time use log - time spent driving, sleeping and down time (anything outside of the cab). These are checked very regularly at weigh stations by the state.
As mentioned Star Trek has various logs; Captain's, Ship's, Personal, as well as each Department.
I would view a summery of logs (Captain, Ship & Department) for a set amount of time (past 2 Months or so) to be a part of the Ship's Papers presented at docking and a complete download and copy during annual maintenance time or using facilities at a Naval or Scout Base (that's part of the price of admission)
