Subsector and Sector maps

Murph

I would like a program that allows me to generate my own maps, and input my own data in an easy to use manner which I can use to generate printable (via inkjet printer) and to save the subsector maps as a .pdf file. The one at the Zhodani Base tends to generate too darn many red zones per sector, and I want to have more control over what I have in a sector.

I can do it old school on paper with map pencils, but being lazy I would like something I can do on a computer that would also print the UPP as well.

I have written such programs often enough in the past. I use it as a bit of a programming kata to learn new techniques) and may do something like this soonish. But no promises. :-)

Can you elaborate on what you want in terms of inputting your own data, and what control you want over what you have in a sector?

What platform are you looking to run this on?

I thought Travellermap could take in UPPs and render printable, the challenge then would be generating formatted input on your terms.

I have something like that, but it takes a much more complicated input than you really want to deal with. It would require editing so that it chould take say a tab delimited excel file with just the material you want to print. 3 drawbacks, though. 1: it is a script file for an open source Matlab eqivalent called Octave (don't ask why!); and 2: you would need to figure out exactly what fields you want included on the map (ie. bases, star info, etc); and 3) output is currently png files because I was getting odd and inconsistent errors with pdf output from Octave. My scripts do all of those calculations and lots more, but in truth the data are not easy to edit. I'm attaching an example map so you can see how it fits your needs.

Yeah, what I am looking for is something I can use to create a subsector by placing the worlds where I want them, and then manually inputting the UPP for each world.

https://travellermap.com/make/poster -> this will let you input your UWP and other values and generate a map in pdf that can be printed.
an invaluable resource. if you can get the 2nd file correct, borders, routes and polities are also available to be added to the map. I used all the time when I am running a Traveller game for MTU to generate the big maps, the jump maps and all the things that I like about Traveller.

Murph, have you looked at this thread?

If you can find a DOS version of Galactic, it runs well in DOSBOX.

If you have access to an iPad, my SectorMaker app is worth a look.

I concur! Sector Maker is great!

(But why can't one change the stars or manually input planet #, belts etc)?

It's been a while since I looked at it. My guess is that there are dependencies with other things. You can always export the data and manually edit things and send it to TravellerMap for viewing.
