T20 The Futures of Gateway Domain and Such

Nathan Brazil

In the history section in http://www.travellerrpg.com/Gateway/pctimeline.html 1116 is mentioned as Strephon getting killed and the Civil War beginning. This got me onto history questions on how you wish to develop the Gateway Quadrant.
1.Though GURPS Traveller clearly goes on to say that it is giving an alternate history(future?) of the 3I, will or should there be a disclaimer that the last incarnation of Traveller never happened (like the Patrick Duffy shower scene in Dallas), or will it be pointed out that GT was an alternate history/universe. (Hey maybe all versions of Traveller can be dealt with that way ;) )
2.Since you have the the 1116 entry, will anthing be tinkered with about how does this also mean that you will keep Rebellion Era about Ley et. al. (I think it was Margaret in charge then)
3.Any desire to incorporate "The Lords of Thunder" in MegaTraveller Digest #4 from DGP since that is nearby? (Hmm Domain and Independents vs K'kree)
4.Does/did Virus happen? (just curious)
5.Will any of these things be addressed?

If possible, I would like to hear the company line besides the all the usual arguments on each points appropriateness. Thanks all.

I think you've got that mixed up, T5 was slated to cover the year 200, T20 will be the year 1000 (still 100 years before the whole question of Strephon's assassination).

Officially in T20 the GURPS timeline does not occur. Events will eventually play out as they did in the original timeline, ie: Strehon killed(???), the Rebellion occurs, and Virus is ultimately unleashed.

Unofficially it really doesn't matter and is up to the GM because all of that doesn't occur for another 100 or more years from the given T20 timeline (year 1000).

The Lords of Thunder do currently appear in some of the material we are working up, but whether it remains is an issue I still have to talk with Marc about. Also remember with the LoT, they only recently set up shop in comparison to when the T20 setting occurs.

Since T20 is set in Milieu 1000, don't you have the best of both worlds in that your material would be suitable for both the OTU and the GTU? (And wouldn't it be best to drop all references to events after your cut-out date? I'm sure a hypothetical future author of a GT module set in Gateway will be grateful for T20 background material but equally grateful for a bit of leeway concerning the events of the 11th Century.)

As a side question: Does Lords of Thunder fall under the DGP Material (it was published in their MegaTraveller Journal 4) or do the Keith brothers still have the rights to it?

You'd have to confirm this with Marc bu MTJ4 was printed under the GDW copyright and thus technically would be the property of GDW->Far Future.

Actually, MTJ4 was published by DGP and they own all the rights to the stuff that they published.

Which is a real shame, b/c I still think that was some of the best source material ever created for any RPG.

Marc, if you're reading any of this, is there any way to convince Roger Sanger to reprint the MT stuff the way that you've been doing the CT stuff (same format and all--think of it as a matching set for my bookshelf)?

Yes published by DGP but look at the copyright on that issue. It reads 'All written contents copyright(c) 1993 Game Designers' Workshop'. This makes everything from MTJ4 except artwork the property of GDW and thus Far Future. Doesn't matter that DGP published it.

On the Sanger issue, I'm not speaking for Marc, but don't hold your breath.

Well, thats good news. Lords of Thunder was a great module. Course, I still want a reprint/update of the Judge Guild Border Prowler series... :>

Which reminds me - which version of Gateway Quadrant are you using? I seem to recall that Lords of Thunder, Judges Guild and the Atlas of the Imperium all had differnet maps (unforetuneately all of the above are in storage right now, and I can't get them till next week).

I have met the person named in the quote above. It is my opinion that we will see the DGP material only when the copyrights expire.

The original Judges Guild Traveller material was de-canonized many many moons ago. The current sector material is based on AotI

"It is my opinion that we will see the DGP material only when the copyrights expire."

Now correct me if I'm wrong, but copyright lasts for 70 years past the death of the author. I'm pretty sure that's what it says on
http://www.copyright.gov/

the web page for the United States Copyright office. That's going to be one long wait.

Later,

Scout
