T5 ETA

Bill:

You read a lot into my post, but you did so quite accurately. In my case, been far less time playtesting, but still have credits in several games, and uncredited playtest of several more.

Hmmm, my irony sense is tickling.

To put things in perspective, this public beta pdf approach is not some wacky idea per se. That is, it's definitely wacky, but it's actually being pursued by at least one other company. ICE are doing it with the HARP scifi game.

So, absent concrete info about, well, anything at all...
Not irony. I'm not kidding. I really do miss some things that others find obvious. I didn't make the leaps of inference that you and kafka did.

Gentlemen,

I'm sorry to dishearten all the true believers out there - and I'd like to think I'm still one of them - but I must strongly agree with Aramis' opinion here and for the same reasons he presents.

Cryptic remarks by those in the know aside, the June 2007 release may be just a giant beta release designed to spark, then gather, as much fan input as possible into T5. If so, a project to produce a finished version of T5 would still require several more months of concerted effort by a formally organized, dedicated playtesting group. Otherwise we may has just entitle the whole thing Son of T4 and get on with using GT and T20.

My fingers are crossed.

Have fun,
Bill
</font>[/QUOTE]Yes, I think Bill's got the sense of it.

Along with Mr. Cameron's comments, I'll simply say that if a usable manuscript appears prior to 2010, I'll be pleasantly surprised. This is based on the rate that material has come out thus far. Perhaps I can be proven wrong, but I highly doubt it.

Don't worry about T5. Just use what you have been & be happy if _anything_ ever comes out again.

Green Ronin publishes stuff in PDF before they print it. They do this partly so that errors can be detected. They then fix the errors, send out free updates to the PDF purchasers, and when they print the book, it benefits from all those eyes finding mistakes prior to the printing of the actual book.

I didn't know there was a company that actually did that. Has it proven effective and worthwhile enough for them to follow this sort of method?

Heh that's pretty much what we are starting to do.

That makes zero sense to me. You get free updates as they come, what's the issue? I'd imagine that GR runs the materials by a competent editor before releasing the initial PDF, and the fixes are more along the lines of typos and such rather than changes to mechanics and rules. Then again I haven't look much at their stuff, so I could be wrong.

From what I've seen, GR products are competently edited with pretty good production standards, though I've only looked at the Mutants and Masterminds line.

It's only a part, Hunter. (Having been in the WFRP2 playtest gave me a rather good impression of Chris, and a VERY bad one of Black Industries...)

Free upgrades are nice, but the PDF stuff I USE, I print. I want it ready to roll out the gate. Good writing skills are usually accompanied by decent thinking skills.

Some errata is inevitable. But slipshod releases are just that: slipshod. It's as likely that the system has been equally carelessly put together &/or worded.

Plus, I won't pay to playtest. Not since I quit playing SFB.

Well T5 won't be out this summer I can pretty much tell you that. It is being worked on regularly and extensively however.

Hunter

Is there an update on when its due or is FarFuture holding to the June 2007 date?

June is still the planned release, though there are several valid format suggestions being tossed around. Latest I heard (March) was:

1000 page CDROM for T5 Beta. Everything more or less complete and in order. Spreadsheets for creating sophonts et al. Pregenerated PDFs with Sophonts on the Sophont Creation Card. Fonts (Vilani, Spacecraft, Geodesic).

Based on feedback from that,

T5.0 CDROM (free upgrade for early buyers).

T5 Book. 352 pages softcover. Complete Referee's Reference. 8.5 x 11.
Possibly a companion volume with more material for the ref.

T5 Book. 96 page softcover. Players Handbook. 5.5 x 8.5.
Although I don't know how everything stands, I've seen bits of several parts, and estimate the State of T5 to be thus.

By "Ready", I mean that I think it could go out the door.

By "Nearly Ready", I mean that I think most essentials and details are done, but there is a bit I consider important that I don't know the status of.

By "Unknown" I mean I don't know anything about the subject.

I. Core
</font>
  • Skills - Ready.</font>
  • Chargen - Framework is ready. Probably still some careers to adapt to it.</font>
  • Tasks, Actions, Interpersonals - Ready.</font>
  • Personal Combat - Ready, or nearly so.</font>
  • Psionics - Unknown (I assume it's based on T4).</font>
II. Support. I assume these categories are non-core but important. The "Tools and Toolkits".
</font>
  • World gen - Ready.</font>
  • Starships and Smallcraft design - Ready, or nearly so.</font>
  • Starship combat - Unknown.</font>
  • Trade - Unknown, but probably ready (based on Merchant Prince).</font>
  • Non-human PC/NPC support - Ready.</font>
  • Equipment lists - Unknown.</font>

Sorry, robject, but in my POV these ARE Core. These are what Traveller is known for. Without them, it would be like Kirk without Spock or McCoy.
;)

Hey Billy, I'm not saying they're not part of Traveller. Nor would I be happy without them. I just ranked the game elements by what I think is central to the game -- the players' interface into the game.

Agree with BillDowns

World Gen, Starship & SC Design, SS Combat, Trade, and equipment are all CORE rules.

Non-human PC is support, but VERY important support.

It isn't going to be released June 07.
