Tarsus...good starting point?

Oh trust me Robject, I have been thinking about it...I like the 'prto-traveller' idea a lot. I have thought about making the rift and corridor the next sector coreward from the SM...what's done-is-done, but I have newbies!

I, too have been toying with my own version of PT (thanks for the inspiration!), working with just a sector map. The Ziru Sirka taking up about four sub-sectors (C,D,H, and G. G & H are semi-colonized.) and a fairly new 'Imperium' founded after some-kind of colonial rebellion against Terra; about two settled subsectors and two-three frontier sub-sectors (K,L,N,O,P). The Rift runs down sub-sectors B-F-J-N. The Vegans are hanging out in subsector E. There is one corridor in sub-sector J (which is why the Vilani decided to go checking out the area, and ran into the Terran Alliance {or whatever}. Interstellar war ensues, but the Vilani weren't prepared for taking on an interstellar nation, peace gets written, colonial rebellion enues, and now a state of tension exists.

Thers is a fairly newly discoverd corridor in sub N, the Trojan Reach (named after the explorer....plus, I thought I could have some tounge-in-cheek fun with system names <g>)

Not sure how far I'll get with it, but it is fun!

No, it wasn't me.

It was Jeffr0 who made the first post, here.

I just became a very "vocal" supporter of the concept.

The next game I run will be a CT+ powered proto-Traveller setting.

Yes, you can jump to an empty hex according to Traveller canon.

Some people don't allow it in their 'verses, but it is part of the OTU.

Just one suggestion,
If the players are new to Traveller generate the characters yourself and give them a choice. Saves time and then you know the characters will fit the adventure.

</font>[/QUOTE]Just so you can look it up, the first reference for it I can find being explicitly permitted is from The Traveller Adventure, in the chapter "In Search of Longer Legs".

Tarsus is a superb module, one of my favorites. It makes a good starting place for adventures in the far frontiers.

I've never read the printed material but Tarsus was my favourite module.

The longest campaign I ever played in started on Tarsus - after finishing the printed adventures (with a diversion to Prison Planet), we became members of the Tarsus Port Authority's External Threat Division and that took us all over the Marches.

It's a great place to start and a good one to rest between adventures - My character had a permanent base there for many years.

If they're 1st time players you can always start them on Collace and rolepay the journey to Tarsus as a "shakedown cruise", get used to each other without doing anything serious to the plot.

Just a couple of other suggestions, I have had great sucess running "snowfall" by joe webb (available free on freelance traveller website) as a first outing. also twighlight's peak is excellent for a buildup into a great dungeon crawl climax and seems to have something for everyone in it.
