Tell Me About Your Character

Everyone likes talking about their character; do that here (being sure to phrase it to conform to one of the Traveller character generation systems). Anyone can just make up a character… the challenge is to express one while conforming to one of the existing character generation systems.

I lifted "Shotgun Mike" Halsey from the pages of Genesis Reprise, a novel I was at the time working on for FASA. Played him in a GURPS Traveller game - it was a sequel to the The Traveller Adventure, in which the characters from the Harrier founded MarchLines (yes, you've heard of them before in Behind the Claw). Our new characters crewed the March Kestrel, one of four ships operated by Marchlines.

Shotgun Mike's stats are unimportant. The manner of his death, however...

Swooping down on a grav belt, Mike was hit in the head by a burst of autorifle fire and killed. His grav belt ploughed into the ground at high speed.

Moments later, the rest of the characters, following in a cutter, crashed atop his cooling corpse, having taken a catastrophic laser hit.

The cutter's l-hyd tanks leaked, freezing Mike's crushed corpse. Then the gas reached explosive mixture in the ship and a spark from the electricals ignited it.

Mike was shot, dropped, crushed, frozen and vapourised, qualifying him as the worst prospect we've ever had for a return in the next series....

Pity. I liked him. It just fell out like that..

Wry chuckles...

Druyodhana Shringgar
8D9887, 3 term Imp Marines Sargent Major (E9), Age 30
Turrent Weapons-2, Mechanical-2, Brawling-2, ZeroGWpn-1, Tactics-1, ZeroGEnv-1, Streetwise-1, AutoRifle-1, Vacc Suit-1, Grav Veh-0, Computer-0
Yori-Regina native, a good marine who served mostly on large Naval ships as security. His combat experience was on anti-piracy operations in the Vargr extents (refers to it as his time “spaying dogs”). Uncomfortable with the prospect of life as a non-jarhead, staving off the withdrawal with shipboard life and a gun collection. Tends to speak at a higher volume than is strictly necessary. Likes cribbage and cat houses.
This one’s kinda my favorite. He’s orthodox without being bland, strong but still plausible and vulgar but not crass.

The adventure which ended with Shotgun Mike's demise was part of a GURPS Traveller campaign reffed first by me and then by Neil Frier, which carried on from The Traveller Adventure. Various references to this campaign have crept into our GURPS Traveller work.

Neil is on this forum these days. Hi, Neil.

CONFIDENTIAL****IISS ONLY****DO NOT DISCLOSE**
Sir Fortinbras Ussock McClure
Commisioner, Tarsus Port Authority, detatched duty/secondment from IISS/Operations.
UPP 7E9CDB
skills: Equestrian-4 Jack of Trades-3 Pilot-1 Navigation-1 Handgun-1 Computer-1 Sabre-1 Streetwise-1 Grav-0 Vacc-0, Gambling minus 4.

Studied xenohydrenics at the Imperial Reserve College, Rhylanor for six weeks until the start of the 5th Frontier War, McClure then enlisted in the Survey branch of IISS, spending the war in and around the Sword Worlds. Resisting pressure to join the Bureacracy after the war, McClure was placed on the Detatched Duty roster and released to serve in the police force of his adopted home, Tarsus, where he heads the External Threat division. McClure is popular with his men due to his hands-on attitude, respect for life and because he is both wealthy and psychologically unable to grasp the basic concepts of gambling.

[edit: Favourite quote- "It can't be hard, I know really stupid people who can do it. Now let me see. I should push this, and unscrew here ...",

...usually uttered while crashing g-carriers, venting all the ship's fuel into space, or laying a claymore mine back-to-front. He has far too much faith in his J-o-T skill.]

Ship's Steward Third Class Eddie Southcount

Eddie Southcount is a young man of Solomoni decent. He is clean shaven, 19 years old, has sandy blond hair, blue eyes and straight, white teeth. Eddie dresses well for one so young and with such limited means. He is not overly fond of hard work. It is obvious he is well educated, and he fits in well in various social situations.

However, Eddie Southcount doesn’t really exist. He is a figment in the imagination of Vice-Count Richard Edward David Southerland IV, heir to the seat of his father, Count Edward Southerland of Regina/Regina. At sixteen, Vice-Count Edward was distressed watching young fools inherit their family’s money and go on to become rich, powerful and influential, yet still remain fools. He decided that it would not be so for him. He was going to make a name for himself before he inherited his family’s vast fortune. He would show the galaxy that Richard Edward David Southerland IV was intelligent, industrious and capable.

The only flaw in his plan would be that Eddie is in no way intelligent, industrious or capable. Vice-Count Edward is lazy and quite accustom to having everything brought to him on a platter. After running away from home and booking passage to the Lanth Sub-Sector, he ran out of cash. He could easily go to any bank and withdraw more cash, but that would alert his father to his whereabouts. Eddie steadfastly refuses to do that until he has some sort of accomplishment to show.

So far, no one has learned Eddie’s true identity, and Eddie hopes to keep it that way. Eddie has worked as a cook on a liner, a starport fright handler, a meditech on a bulk ore freighter, an engineer on a Type R "Fat Trader," a co-pilot on a Empress Marvava A2 trader and a gunner on a mail ship in the Varger Extents. Eddie doesn't think any of these would count as an "accomplishment" for a Peer of the Realm, but he has high hopes for the future.

Karl Jungerson Swordworlder

Karl Jungerson is a native Swordworlder, and that's really all that needs to be said. He stands a muscular six feet tall. He has long, blond hair, blue eyes and well-chiseled good looks. He is 26 years old.

Karl's home world is Beater. After the Fifth Frontier War Beater became capital of the newly created Border Worlds. The Border Worlds is an Imperial client state, but Karl's family has always remembered "the old days." Karl is fiercely proud of his heritage. He is always ready to defend the good name of The Sword Worlds, and with fists, knife or sword if necessary.

When Karl was 24, he left his home over "some unpleasant business." He does not share details. He does admit it involved the daughter of a local nobleman and "her pencil-neck brother." He has been heard to say "I didn't think I hit him THAT hard." Karl left with what belongings he could carry on the first starship to grant him working passage off world.

Karl has drifted the Spinward Main ever since. Usually he travels via working passage. He has done most every job on a starship and is a hard worker. He has yet to be offered a regular position with a starship crew, but he has hope for the future. He hopes to eventually return home after he has "made good."

Vendi "Pretty Boy" Spenduni

Vendi Spenduni has come far in life using just two things: quick wits and a smooth tongue. Raised on Mora, he attended Regent University on a sports scholarship. While Vendi was a fair athlete, he proved to be an excellent, though not exceptional, student. By the end of his sophomore year, he knew he was looking at a degree in Phys Ed followed by absolutely no life whatsoever. He needed to distinguish himself somehow. He bluffed his way into the office of the Dean of Students and, fifteen minuets later, walked out with a letter of transfer to the Business School.

Sensing this was his big opportunity Vendi threw himself, not into his studies, but into networking. He compiled lists of professors and their family members. He sent letters to former graduates claiming to be a forgotten drinking buddy. He worked as an intern for anyone who would have him. At one point, he was a member of four different fraternities. He kept in touch with everyone.

He did not neglect his athletics. He knew his team performance was his ticket through school. In the end it was his good looks and charm, rather than his skill, that saw him through. It was a case of Vilani wiskey that made him captain of the tennis team his senior year. He was not so lucky on the boxing team, however. While Vendi was a technically proficient boxer, he lacked the speed, stamina and toughness of his teammates. "Pretty Boy" Spenduni finished his final season on the boxing team without winning a single fight.

Vendi graduated from the Mora Regent University Collage of Business with a degree in Business Administration and a minor in Interplanetary Economics. Drawing on his network of contacts, he quickly built a successful import/export business from almost nothing. While exchanging odor-absorbent diapers and Bungo dolls for unprocessed grain was profitable, it was also boring. Vendi found he couldn't care less about the details of running a business. All he cared about was the DEAL. Even the money was secondary.

Currently, Vendi is looking for an opportunity that will allow him to meet new people, travel, and make deals.

Skip Stern

Skip Stern is a tall, slender man of Solomani decent. He is 35 years old, six feet tall and weighs 140 pounds. He has brown eyes and has light brown hair.

As a youth, skip applied for and was accepted to the Merchant Academy. He was a good student and excelled during the annual "Summer Cruises." While at the Academy he joined the boxing team and earned a reputation as a good boxer.

After the Academy he was hired by Tukera Lines. He served three terms for Tukera without incident. He rotated between Engineering and Deck departments and was promoted quickly. At the end of his third term with Tukera he was a First Officer and had earned his Chief Engineer's License and Unlimited Master's License. Tukera offered him a promotion to Captain and command of a three thousand ton freighter if he would reenlist. Skip jumped at the offer.

Shortly after taking command of the freighter, Skip was in the Rylanor system, outbound to Regina with a load of computer parts. There was another Tukera ship inbound. After a series of miscalculations, the two ships collided. There was no loss of life, but their was tens of megacredits of damage to each ship. During the inquiry, it came out that the other captian was drunk on duty. He was also the son of a Baron who was a major Tukera stockholder. When the inquiry board made it's finding, Skip was handed the blame. He was discharged from Tukera without benefits. Further, his Unlimited Master's License was revoked.

For the last several months Skip has hung around the starports of the Spinward Main. He exchanges travel for working passage, but always under an assumed name. He has applied for and received his Skiptracer's License.

That is SO gonna leave a mark!

Ganidiirsi Thomas O'Flynn
7B7AA8 IISS Operations/Security 4terms IS-12
Liaison-4, Bribery-3, Handgun-3, VaccSuit-3, Leader-2, Navigator-2, Trader-2, Law-1, ZG Combat-1, ZG Weapons-1
KCR 50, Snub Pistol

My all-time favorite character! I'd always had a love affair with the Scouts and Gani was my quinessential IISS "been-in-the-XBoat-too-long" nut job Scout. I played through the Tarsus box set with him and man was he fun! Without one rank in Grav Vehicle, he still evaded a SuSAG CAT team by blowing full bore through the woods--without a scratch! The team found the old Sword Worlder patrol ship on the moon...so Gani trades it to SuSAG for a brand new Type A Beowulf! How? He convinced them it was one of their Patrol ships lost during the 5th Frontier war and carrying a cargo of Psi-Double!
After that stunt, he had two more fun-filled years of game time as what he called "his Grace's Own Personal Con Man" before the corp found him...the party found his body looking like set decoration from "Silence of the Lambs"...

I miss him....<sniffle> :D

MICK GANNIN: (C8AAA7) 5'7" ,275lbs, age 32 Grew up on a high-G world (C965358-F)

(Built with Mercenary/High Guard character Generation) Highest skills: Battle Dress 5, Engineering 4, Grav Vehicle 3, SMG 3, Tactics 3.

Mustering out as a 2nd Lieutenant after serving several adventurous terms among the Duke of Regina's Own....the 4518th Lift Infantry Regiment. Upon leaving the service he accompanied a friend who had been left a scout ship by an eccentric and very dead uncle. That started a series of adventures ranging from Regina to Darrian Space and back.

Mick is sort of like an Australian Jesse Ventura. Very big, very muscled, and seems to be happiest when fighting. When he makes use of his TAS memberhsip he stands out in the crowd, especially since his social is several notches below most of the Naval nobles that frequent such places. No nonsense and tough, but also jovial and protective, especially of his three younger sisters (though most of the time other people need protecting from THEM).

He's more at home in rougher places, starport bars and such. He has a lifetime membership to the hedonistic domed Pleasure Cities of Stellatio 7, thanks to his and his companions' heroic defense of the resorts from a corrupt official in charge of some belter mass drivers. Currently he is enjoying a semi-retired state as Captain of the Guard for the 100sq miles of a Baronyon a world in the north-eastern corner of the Regina subsector (forgive me for not remembering the name at this time). The Baron was one of his crewmates (another character) who had lost his title, but was able to win it back....with the help of Mick and his other friends.

just starting campaign

Lashumdii Gudakhurkhash (Pure Blood Vilani)
B696FD
Age 34
Liaison 1, Linguistics 2 (Galanglic, Vargr), Handgun 1, Cudgel 2, Vacc Suit 1, Commo 2, Streetwise 1, Leader 1, Gambling 1, Admin 1
Personality: I am thinking somewhere between Nigel Hawthorne in Yes, Minister and Rimmer from Red Dwarf, with a touch of Basil Fawlty for spice. He is a bit of a Vilani supremacist, and looks down on all other human species. He is phenomenally well educated though not very quick mentally and comes across as a snob (which he is)
And no, he does not have a nickname, he answers to Marquis Lashumdii or Mr. Gudakhurkhash
I am just trying to figure a good accent to give him. I think Vilani is somewhere between Russian and German for accent

I had a character called Hanston J Spencer (my initials, backwards) who was a four term scout. He got tortured for years in my friends campaign, hounded by various Megacorps in lots of different ways.

His scout ship, the Jester's Tear, was stolen god knows how many times and returned to him pink, with 'The Love Boat' scrawled on the side when some criminal elements stole it and turned it into a mobile brothel.

Sheesh.

My wife and I will call our first son Spencer, and she'd be stunned if she knew why I'd picked that name :-D

A Hindi accent would probably work well for the Vilani, though I must admit the thought of a tableful of gamers all talking like Apu on "The Simpsons" or Fisher Stevens' character in the Short Circuit movies makes me cringe. Subtelty and/or cultural sensitivity weren't common traits among most of the folks I played with...

Trivia: a few years back either Marc Miller or Loren Wiseman explained on the TML that the reason Vilani sounds that way is because the "language" was built to match the mapboard from Imperium on which, coincidentally, the Imperial (i.e. Vilani) worlds were mostly given Babylonian (or at least Babylonian-sounding) names...
