I lifted "Shotgun Mike" Halsey from the pages of Genesis Reprise, a novel I was at the time working on for FASA. Played him in a GURPS Traveller game - it was a sequel to the The Traveller Adventure, in which the characters from the Harrier founded MarchLines (yes, you've heard of them before in Behind the Claw). Our new characters crewed the March Kestrel, one of four ships operated by Marchlines.
Shotgun Mike's stats are unimportant. The manner of his death, however...
Swooping down on a grav belt, Mike was hit in the head by a burst of autorifle fire and killed. His grav belt ploughed into the ground at high speed.
Moments later, the rest of the characters, following in a cutter, crashed atop his cooling corpse, having taken a catastrophic laser hit.
The cutter's l-hyd tanks leaked, freezing Mike's crushed corpse. Then the gas reached explosive mixture in the ship and a spark from the electricals ignited it.
Mike was shot, dropped, crushed, frozen and vapourised, qualifying him as the worst prospect we've ever had for a return in the next series....
Pity. I liked him. It just fell out like that..
Wry chuckles...
