And can we please drop this whole "death threat" foolishness? If someone says "Sod it", do you really think they mean to do what that abbreviation implies? "Shoot the X" is an idiomatic expression, and is no more a death threat than saying "to hell with that" is a sincere desire to see someone burn for all eternity.

Humph.

Well I remember my first infraction here at CotI, was because I mentioned about the American Revolution and it upset some British members.

I think the real issue (purely my opinion) is because of the preceived unequal treatment of some posts depending on whom is doing the posts not what the post actually says.

It's likley becuase the meaning that you wish to portray is all in the internation of the way you wish to say the phrase or saying or in the body language that you would normally present with that phrase or saying.

Unfortunatly internet messaging being informal, email, IM, forum posts etc is the worst form of communication there is.

Only 7% of the meaning of any communication are the words themselves, and with no other way of expressing the meaning appart from the words it's very easy for others to misinterperate the meaning you wished to be portrayed ... especially during internet communications.

I would suggest only using literal meanings, detailed explinations, or masive use of smillies and or [emote] markings [/emote] when you are trying to portry anything that is not within the direct meaning of your words.

How you interperate the written word, is not how someone else may interperate the written word ... and there lies the start of many a flame war.

Best regards,

Ewan

Or maybe instead of just assuming that something was intented the way you read it, you should ask them (the person that posted it).

The issue has been and seems to still be here on CotI that one person can say shoot the _______ and nothing is done, while the next person that says shoot the _______ is banned.

This entire thread back when would have been placed in the outhouse/politicial section.

Now it just goes on and on, with pages of things that turn off a few and some of those that get turned off by it just never come back to the site.

In the words of Basil Fawlty "don't mention the war! I mentioned it once, but I think I got away with it all right."

PS. Sorry, I couldn't resist.

The problem here is that the original version has been criticised for its implausibilities for over 30 years. It would have been nice if a present-day adaptation had fixed those implausibilities.

Hans

Actually, those "implausibilities" are part of the inherent mystery of the adventure. It's up to the players to discover the answers to the mysteries behind the "implausibilities".

That would be true if there were plausible answers to the mysteries. As it is, it's up to the refereee to cover up for the failure of the author to provide answers that work. That's a bug, not a feature.

Those quotation marks around the word 'implausibility' implies that you have answers that work. Care to share them with the rest of us?

I've sat on responding to a few points till I was certain I could be civil.
Can you seriously question the fact people have left COTI because of the flamefests of the past? I walked a away for a month or so, came back and it was worse, commented on it and left for a couple months. It was a much calmer, if quieter board when I returned. Many active posters were gone and not seen since.

The Mongoose forum used to mostly rants and flames, and hijacked threads were quite common. The truth of the matter is that I like many found COTI after getting back into Traveller with MGT, and found a less than hospitable board.

I've been on BBS's since back oh 82 or so, on dial-up back then, I have seen flame wars, and watched boards die from the wounds over the decades since.

I've grown a thick skin and generally just stay out of the commonly schoolyardy level of discourse that most flamewars descend into.

I played Traveller back in the day, from '77 till about '89. Homebrews, ATU's, never really played a straight OTU, and frankly never got a straight grip on Canon anyway, we had so my house variations on OTU concepts anyway.

Its Traveller folks. Its a game of shared imagination with whatever rule set your using. I can see passion arguing about a rules interpretation, but not about personal taste. It's Traveller the Rules and the OTU as a setting, get a grip, we all use it how we want anyway.
