The 'Atherton'

Thanks guys!

Basing the design on an airship gondola, I was thinking that staterooms would line the outside edge of the strtucture on two levels, where the large windows are, affording lovely views when in orbit. Figure 12 staterooms per floor on each side of the ship (48 of the allotted 60). The others would be interior staterooms or on an upper level.

And the banquet/social area would be under one of the 'discs' in the roof, with the promenade connecting it to the more businesslike crew/engineering section. The warp drive would probably be positioned dorsally, above the structure, reminiscent of an airship/air tram. Just a brainstorm!

Don't forget that you will have to have a way to make the stateroom and lounge viewportals opaque while the ship is in jump space because looking at it might make one go insane.

Randy: That's easily enough done, and not expensive, either. Polarizing film on the window, and liquid crystal between the panes. Make opacity the fail-safe, and looking out requires power to twist the LC's polarity.

Ms Mickazoid: And I was just looking at SF art galleries today after yard work too! Yes, the Airship gondola shape--Now it hits me! ( SMACK in the face too

Lovely idea with the windows--the orbital views will be spectaular! Might even (hint-hint Renard) charge more for 'em than the other 12 interior rooms! ( yes, RW economics- "pay for the view" applied here).

The "open air" feel to the domed dining rooms also a plus! Sexy? Hell, book me High passage tomorrow! Keep the Carribean! :D

Mick:
It's funny, when I watched the video night before last, I got that impression...it got me thinking...my original idea was a 5000-tonner with about 500-tons to passenger/crew spaces. Keeping the already posted spaces and increasesing tonnag back up to 5000-tons, what do you think about attaching the above 'gondola' to the underside of the main-hull (about 4600-tons). The old girl could remain a TL 13 design in most design systems, but for LBB2, TL15...which kind of places it out of the realm of my imagined universe....but could look really cool!

and yes, Randy...I know....I almost added in <ducks head> when I typed that
However, was the easiest analouge I could think of. As for the windows...I always use the Starship Operator's Manual for a lot of my interior details, so I would assume the 'window's would be able to opaque themselves, turn themselves into a holo-screen, etc...

Looking again at the sketch, I am wondering if I might not like the idea of the Lounge being located on the deck above the dining room...both in the circular area, with a staircase leading down from the lounge into the dining room....historically pretty acurate for a CGT ship...all of the liners of the French Line had a 'grande descent' into the dining room.

And I am not so sure about charging less for an interior room...I mean, having the real window might be nice, but the holoscreens in the room are pretty realistic....plus, it's not like you can open the window for a breeze! However, I would assume that the 4 12-ton suites would always be located on the exterior of the hull.

Just curious...anyone out there interested in doing deckplans for the 'Atherton' and going in as a duo in the new contest? Drop me a PM if interested.
