The effects of automation on a stellar society

I'm rebuilding the campaign; it has been gathering dust for about 15 years, and it is time to bring it back into the light of day. My original group is long-dissolved, but a new group is being built.

I'm looking forward to it...

Best of luck with rebuilding the campaign, I'll have a look at the links in your signature block more closely now.

And it is funny I picked up on Maslow from your writing - obviously your ideas came across clearly to me, and I thought I was adding something new!

My Varan campaign grew from a discussion in Psychology class (fancy that!) while discussing the Maslow hierarchy. The teacher had met Abraham Maslow in the early sixties, and was fascinated with the whole thing.

In the original (CT) campaign, the players were responsible for releasing The Winnowing while doing some exploration on Pandissol. They were actually seeking artifacts and/or data in preparation for an expedition to the Shattered Worlds -- oops.

Even if the PCs hadn't done so, it was a "coming attraction" for the campaign, to point it in the right direction.

Play was curtailed a couple of years later, when I joined the U.S. Air Force. Over the years, I moved to MegaTraveller, then Gurps. Most of my campaign was on paper, and lost during a move. I started a new game in Deneb.

When T5 kickstarted, I decided to reactivate The Varan Influence, and move my existing campaign from the Deneb sector back to the Varan sector.

I'm incorporating a lot of my original ideas, and going in some new directions as well. T5 has some interesting new things, including hop drives, that required some adjustments on my part.

Thankfully, the basic premise behind the campaign is still valid, and should provide some good entertainment for my players.

I just added the world list to the wiki, and at some point will start adding world details. Still a lot to do, but I'm getting closer.

I do know that I may need to tweak some of my world data, based on some of the errata found. Starports will probably be affected the most, based on the effect pop has on port type. Shouldn't have a major effect on the campaign, but ya never know. lol

It is a pipe dream at this time, but maybe someday the sector will be acknowledged, and maybe the Varans will be added to the official race list. I know in my campaign they are a major race, but even as a minor race, I could handle that.

More to follow, and ideas still welcome.

My Thoughts

My thoughts seem to center on the creation and distribution of food to the masses.
I can see how automation would generate food on the farms, harvest and process it and even transport it to the cities.
It would be cooked and prepared by bots and perhaps (this is simply where my mind went) made available in automats.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automat

So citizens would go into an automat for each free meal.

With proper set up I can even see apartment buildings with free food delivery to each room.
