The importance of having an Official Traveller Universe

Whether it is a re-release of a publication, errata, or new supplements, isn't it common for there to be some things that are changed, redone in some way, or contradicted? Isn't the authority on what is official the responsibility of Mongoose and Matt and not the fans?
Yes, of course. The authority is with Marc Miller and his appointed deputies. But they can't do it by themselves. And that's not meant as a slam. A setting the size of Charted Space is just too big for anyone to detail. People have been working on it for 30 years, and we (sorry, they) are only approaching something close to a decent information density for the Spinward Marches alone (if there was something like The Traveller Adventure and Sword Worlds for every subsector in the Marches, I'd say they'd reached it). It's not reasonable to expect any company to provide that amount of information.

So some of us fans volunteer to do some of the work. I don't see there's anything wrong with that. And if TPTB want, they can accept the help or not. They're the ones with the authority.

There certainly isn't anything wrong with that. I've been toying with the idea of an online sub sector MPOLTG type thing with each system having it's own GM to define and rule over it as characters arrive and depart.

MPOLTG: Multi player on line text game. Essentially PbP but with seperate threads for each system and additional threads for when ships are in jump space. When the characters are in a system, they have the opportunity to interact with whoever else may be in that thread, get in a bar fight with them, get hired onto their ship, attack their ship in space, whatever.
