The Other Service

Thank you once again, Aramis. 76 Patrons. I have fond memories of Supplement 6, but haven't picked it up in many long years; you have inspired me to revisit it...

Thanks again also, Genegeorge. What you have written reminds me of low level thief characters in the classic version of a well-known fantasy RPG: they are fun and challenging to play none-the-less, although sometimes require a little more role-playing.

Happy Sixday everyone!

Griggs.

Note: Mongoose's 760 patrons isn't quite as good, but is FAR more extensive... and is similarly themed.

One should note that there are two Mongoose 760 Patrons, the first edition being more along the lines of encounters and the second true patrons looking to hire.

Thank you both,

I'm still working with materials from GDW, FASA, PP, etc. I'm yet to investigate Mongoose Publications, but should look into it...

"Other" always seemed like the dregs of the Imperium. A "you weren't good enough to make it in a real career" option. Nobody seemed to want to play Others once we got our hands on Citzens of the Imperium. The CotI careers were much more interesting as potential characters.

"Other" careers

Dragon (its Ares scifi supplement) had a number of good careers -- politician, "priest-class", athlete, amongst others.

Now I've looked up in the Dragon index, an article in #35 actually expands ("a la Mercenary") the Other class into "branches" of Politics, Finance, Arts, Academia and Admin. This issue was in 1980, post Book 4 and Supplement 4.

Agggh. Totally BOGUS!!! I wish I had known this three weeks ago.

I've loved 76 Patrons for decades, it's one of the best books ever. I recently ordered a used copy of 760 Patrons, thinking it would be something similar but only BIGGER! I got it and was horribly disappointed. It was really just 760 casual encounters, most of which weren't really adventure seeds at all. It must have been the first edition you've mentioned.

The ebay and Amazon prices reflect their relative value, last I looked.

I own both, and each are useful in their own way, can't beat 1500+ of either type on tap at any given moment.

Other careers

Dragon #5 (MAR '80) had an article about this "career" path.

Pegasus #11 (vintage early '80s) had one as well.

In the post-modern era - there are some nice articles on Freelance Traveller - "Invisible Masses" and The "Other" Option.
