You crash on a post-nuclear holocaust world were Terran primates evolved ( ancients or uplift) to TL 3.

It's a race to the remains of an ancient starship and escape. ???

Yeah waddya think?

I can't help thinking that somewhere in the universe there has to be something better than man.

Weee! I love Planet of the Apes. I must find a way to work this into my game.

I'd probably go with the movie version over the book one stylistically. Have them inexplicably speak Galanglic, and the Human part of their civilization fell during the Long Night. I'd keep the idea that the Apes have no idea that Humans are actually intelligent (though it might be fun to have them accept Vargr with no reservations - clearly furred creatures are not as obsessed about environmental protection, and thus are free to develop higher mental facilities, LOL) and are mostly useful as laboratory animals.

Maybe some retrovirus infected the humans and robbed them of the power to understand language. It would be most appropriately ironic if the same "downlower" virus was originally created by man to uplift the apes.

I was going to suggest a "Planet of the Hounds" Vargr version, but Vargr are smart enough to invent their own jump drives and such; this setting works best when the dominant species is not as smart as it thinks it is.

I think adding in either a myth about talking humans, or historical evidence for such (how about "cave paintings" or something, written in Vlandi, which the locals can't read, but the players can. maybe a log by the last intelligent colonists as they were hunted down, or the crew of a previous crash landing).

oh, oh, the "Cave" is the remains of the old colony starship, maybe a classic traveller ship like a Far trader (i assume the planet is a backwater or otherwise off the Mains, so a jump 2 or better ship would be needed). the apes know of its location, but can't get in, as they lack the knowledge to get though the locks and such. lengend speaks of the Men of old, who spoke like Ape, and could work wonders. when the players turn up, three steps behind the plot and carrying enough firepower to level a small city, one of the apes points the humans at the " Iron Cave of Men". since players are players, i'm sure they will have no trouble getting in, getting the parts they need and maybe completly upsetting the Apes idea of life as they go.

another cool idea would be having Uplifted dolphins in the seas, which have (for what ever reason) retained knowledge of humanti, but maybe lost how to speak Galanglic.

actually, why not make the apes (and the dolphins) only speak Vlani? the orginal colony was a solomani led effort but the colonists were almost all of vlani stock, and so you get a language barrier (which can be overcome fairly easily, mabye via a com-dot with a vanli translator in it).

I had an interesting discussion with (primarily) Bill Cameron a while back that might interest you. It's in a thread called "Uplifted Apes" and it's on the scout board.

I would include a link, but I don't know how to create one to a thread.

I need to qualify the thread

I had a few beers and my wife was watching the " monkey movie " it was just e-flatulence. Though if someone did write it it would be interesting. ;)

A few years back I read a fan-fiction that would really help you with this idea. It was a cross over/mash-up, whatever of the old BSG characters finding thier "Lost Colony" which is of course The Planet of the Apes. The story arc might be too large, Ape City, the Forbidden Zone, an entire post holocaust world conplete with underground dwelling mutant (Psionic) survivors. You could easily turn this into a grand campagin. As a quick setting, I would consider the re-make of this ape classic that came out in 2001 as a smaller 'sand box'; no ruined world etc.

Overall, it dose sound like a real good setting.

If you look in the upper right corner of the post you will find the number of that post within the thread (right next to the "exclamation mark-in-a-triangle" you use to report an offensive post).

This number is a link to that post... place your pointer over it and right-click then select "copy link location". This will copy the URL of that specific post.

Then go to where you want to post it, and when you have the reply window open, click on the "earth with an infinity sign" symbol, then paste the URL into the window that pops up, and post.
