Thread Resurrect

From this post, it seems that the Rodger Young from the book is very much like the big brother to the Kinunir.

Therefore, I'd put particle accelerator barbettes on that beastie.

Umm, I know this is a loooooong time coming (first meant to post when the thread started but kept forgetting :( ) but for a reality check I saw the measures and scale of a very nice resin model way back.

My quick estimate at the time puts the Starship Troopers Rodger Young (from the movie) in the neighbourhood of 72,000dtons. That's taking 50% of the full dimensions of the scale model which has it about 332m long x 86m high x 68m wide. Even figuring my 50% empty space is off the thing is much much bigger than the Kinunir
Let's say even only 10% of the full dimensions is actual displacement it'd still be about 14,000dtons.

Now, go build it again, build it BIGGER! ;)

I see it as the difference between Book 2 and Book 5. The original (old) Rodger Young is a Book 2 "Small Ship" universe design, the newer (movie) Rodger Young is a Book 5 "Big Ship universe design.

I was only thinking of the Rodger Young of the novel. As far as I'm concerned, the movie doesn't even exist. About the only thing it had in common with the novel was the title.

While I agree with you to a point, the movie DID try, on its miniscule budget, to approximate the feel of the book.

Considering the the director was trying to discredit the book, and its message, by his own admission...

The movie is a parody of the book. :(

Trying to get back to the subject....

Just how many troopers were carried by the movie version of the Rodger Young? Perhaps they need such a big ship?

If the movie ship only carried one platoon, there's no way to justify it as a TRAVELLER ship; not a "corvette transport," anyway.

I don't recall a hard number but it's been a while since I saw the movie. I seem to recall the model having several landing craft and fighters though and a suggestion of a large force, company size at least and probably more I'd guess.

That is one of the major differences between the two. The novel has a few troops, in power armor, making an orbital drop. The movie has lots and lots of troops, in standard armor, landing in drop ships.

72,000 dtons is a regimental transport at the least, in TRAVELLER terms. Even a 14,000 dtons ship can easily carry a battalion (without vehicles).

And travel half way across the galaxy? ;)

But I'd say you're probably right about the capacity, though the support craft and facilities could take up a good chunk of the volume.

Hey, just say that the fuel requirement is two 4 parsec jumps.

80% fuel (minimum - that's without power plant fuel) really cuts into carrying capacity.

The ship seen in the movie, this vessel can carry and drop an entire regiment
of infantry at one time, covering them with her own extensive armament and
the eight squadrons of fighters. The fighters can also act as gunships in
support of the troops once landed.

Each dropship can carry a platoon of troops. Four dropships carry a company,
20 dropships a battalion, and the full force of 80 dropships can land the whole
regiment in one mass assault, if needed.

The ship has a heavy armament, including particle accelerators, fusion guns,
laser turrets, and missile bays. Her defenses include light armor, the best
screens available, and considerable sandcaster and repulsor batteries.

The movie version of the RY was quoted by Carmen Ibanez as being "a million tons of starship". For what it's worth, I think the ship looked that large. Verhoeven's was going for a "big" look to the whole movie, so the ships were huge.

I liked both as well. My adult brain prefers the novel, while my child brain (whose existence I am loath to admit) thinks the movie was cool!

Rodger Young (movie version)

That's a smashing good design at a quick look Oz! Thanks!

Daneel Olivaw, that "million tons" was probably meant as weight* so 72Ktons displacement is probably close enough. And my brain seems to be built a lot like yours ;) Fan of both for different reasons, and they argue constantly :D

* I wouldn't trust a Hollywood type to know the difference :)
