This used to be called the "What is Traveller?" discussion.

The term "canon" was imported by fans (Hans!) into Traveller fan discussions in the early 1990s.

I'd heard it in use in the early 90's from non-internet sources. Especially given the notice in Atlas of the Imperium.

Canon is mostly a setting issue. Canon is also a flavor issue. Warp drive is ST. Hyperspace lanes is SW. Jump drive with 1-6 pc range is Traveller.
Canon would be Rules As Written. It gets fuzzy when there are a half dozen or so slightly different sets of Rules.

"Canon" is whatever the person running the game says that it is. Given the range of rules, a cocsistent "canon" is impossible.
