Hey, I was just looking at some stuff for a new PC and I looked at the TL2 2 KG grapnel and said to myself "There has got to be something better than this."

Lord Plop? If the guys at the old Janes fighter site heard that, they'd be rolling on the floor. The tag should be more appropriatly labeled:

Lord of the Plop, Master of the Ejection Seat!

Interesting forward looking ideas:

The cling suit to do a spider man instead?

The electrified grapnel (or grav) for grabbing a ship's hull as you float by....

Nanowire (or some other very small, strong, carbon filament) that you can carry a small spool of that the whole team can clip to for minimum weight/size.

Powered pitons (self driving).

AG belts, but not full AG, just partial AG to aide climbing.

There are lots of good ideas related to mountaineering or other forms of escalade. Or rapelling.
