To boldly go where no Solomani has gone before....

Wanting to run a CT Traveller/Star Trek TOS campaign all exploratory, beasties, dead civilisation ruins, new civilisations encouraged to join our society, I am finding the 3I just a little too settled for my use and taste.

Encouraged by a thread here, however, the rimward side of the Solomani Confederation sounds a lot more useful, as well as throwing in some politics and sneaky SolSec stuff!

I understand that the classic Alien module 6 has a sector level map of this area (Aldebaran or Neworld sectors), but no real detail? So leaving the door open for me design a few sub sectors, on the edge of the canon map?

Be interested to hear of anyone who has tried anything like this and how it played out.

The MT Solomani and Aslan supplement mentioned the decades long Solomani rimward expeditions, with several still out there - missing.

So naturally I ran a campaign based on one of the missing rim exploration fleets :)

There are areas all over the map that can be used for 5-year missions.

http://travellermap.com

The rift traces from Delphi to near the Ley/Fornast border.
The rift trace in Verge.
Hinterworlds or just about any part of the Gateway region.
Beyond Ingukrax to core and trailing.
Foreven is a blank to allow for this sort of thing if you like.
Trojan Reach (see Leviathan)
More than about two sectors coreward of the Marches and Deneb, in the thinning region of Vargr space.
And of course the Zhodani core route.

It is useful to note that the 100-odd episodes of the original five-year mission (three live action seasons and two animated) frequently involved populated worlds, from 1 or 2 up to millions at least, and including their own colonies and outposts as well as aliens running from very Kirkable to blobs and energy beings. Population is important to the feel of such a campaign. What makes the central Imperium unsuitable in 1105 is the level of communication.

Trans-Solomani space is a good choice, but not the only good choice.

Thanks Mike I can see all sorts of possibilities there. Be interesting to know (roughly) when they sent these rim expedition fleets out? And how they were composed.

I am imagining something less grand -more typical Traveller single small(-ish) ship fare. Maybe a follow up to the missing rim fleet? With a PC SolSec on board just like Soviet Zampolit?

Allows for finding relic rim fleet ships and a mystery as to how that happened. And maybe negotiating an alliance with a new race that has a guilty secret around one of the rim explorers also?

Very true GypsyComet, I just want to be away from the stock alien races too. Apart from Neworld and Alderbaran these other non3I areas seem to border one of the major CT alien races. Not a criticism, just an observation, and therefore not what I am looking for.

You don't have to play with the standard OTU Solomani sphere map, at all.

The IMTU forum has several ATUs that are near Earth settings, Golan just posted his most current one and I have mine.

You've taken the big step of picking the environment you want, now it's a matter of what play effect you want and the work of creating that setting, or using published material.

I am working right now on what I call the Piper-Norton sector, to the Rimward of the Canopus Sector. It is intended for wide-open exploration, and yes, there are dead civilization ruins, maybe a remnant of the Bald Space Rovers, and assorted other goodies from the writings of H. Beam Piper, Andre Norton, and a few other writers. I am trying to get the first Subsector laid out, which is the Sword Subsector, sort of Space Viking-ish, with some other things in there as well. Still getting the planet names and locations down.

Rules are sort of a combination of Classic and Mongoose, with two possible Interstellar Drives. There is the Standard Jump-Drive, but a bit more efficient when it comes to Liquid H, and the hyperspace drive of Piper and Mongoose, which covers a parsec a week, but range depends on how long you can keep the crew buttoned up.

I will try to get a version posted in the near future, but I do have my son's wedding coming up, along with my summer World War 2 class that I need to put together a booklet on World War 2 military technology, tactics, and logistics for the students, and then my daughter's wedding. This is getting squeezed in between other things.
