Cleaned; thanks for pointing it out!

Don't forget SunDog: Frozen Legacy. Runs on a modern PC under the Steem emulator.

I spent many a days when I was younger staying up all night playing that game.

There is supposed to be a modern remake of sunDog available here and is discussed here; I do not know how complete this remake is, but its worth a try.

Also, one of the game's designers has a site here.

It (X3) seems quite sophisitcated, but still conceptually the same as Elite, ie: no on foot stuff, no real npcs, just trading, shooting, and mining. And no game has ever equalled the divine control system of Elite.

But it looks like fun, and it looks gorgeous too, so I hope you enjoy it. In fact, let us know what it's like, cuz I may consider getting it when my Mac can run Windows.
X3 (and X2) are sophisticated alright, if that's your term for a really steep learning curve.
X3 is a good game, but make sure you get a multi function joystick, playing with just the keyboard is a real pain. The game is more like a flight sim, so it takes many hours of work to get the hang of it. Be prepared to spend many hours before you start having fun. :( But it's worth it in the end.

Another Travellerish game is any of the Universal Combat games. These do allow you to exit your ship and run around on planets in 1st person mode. These have similar issues as X2/3. Complicated with a steep learning curve.

I've got X3, but I can't get the doggone thing installed. First CD installs properly, but it always gets hung up when I move to the second CD.

Hmm...

StarCraft has a certain level of Traveller feel to it, though it has a certain higher level of "sci-fantasy" elements; the main reason for this is that StarCraft borrows liberally from a very wide variety of military sci-fi sources, from some of which Traveller has borrowed as well (Starship Troopers comes to mind).
