Traveller-esque Computer Games

Use the "J" key to start the in-system jump.

If you want to avoid being stopped every few minutes, aim your ship about 45 degrees upward for a while to get off the main traffic route.

There should be a .pdf with the installation that lists hotkeys.

The Elite Manual is also a big help.

Wow.

Just played last night. So smooth! I remember it being much more jerky. (that blazing fast C=64...)

Some really nice touches.

Good fun.

Shame that My Lovely Wife needs the computer for, you know, work & stuff.

Download the expansion packs...you haven't lived until you sail into the teeth of a pirate base on one of those asteroid hideouts! There are also a large number of new ships and skins.

Oolite ate two whole weekends out of my life, and continues to nibble away at certain days when it gets an appetite.

It's good at that.

The hacked apple II version of elite had a "double time" switch. Made those long trips of several jumps less annoying.

Witchfire fuel injectors are a must to make the in-system trip bearable. Not only do they speed the trip, they can help you get away from that 15-ship pirate fleet that's out for blood. Save up your credits.

I think WJP's link refers to a newer game.

Megatraveller was released in 1990, and Quest for the Ancients in 1991.

The link refers to a game being announced in 1999. Appears, like much else, to be vaporware.

Yep, I own MT1 and MT2. I bought them when they came out. The link I posted is for another, more modern, game--annouced sometime during the T4 era.

oolite update: I have been playing this game for a couple days now that I replayed Wasteland twice with the same characters. (Dex 15, Luck 20, and lockpick level 7 and still can't pick the locks in the waste pit.) I discovered that it has a neat wrinkle that Elite didn't IIRC. I don't have a joy stick and trying to dock with the keyboard was killing me 4 times out of 5. Then I discovered that I could sell my ship and buy a cheaper one and afford a docking computer well. But I still need a joystick so I can fight. Anybody have a recomendation for a cheap joystick?
