Traveller Miniatures... No, really...

Please forgive the cross posting on this message. There are a lot of people who might be interested, so I'm posting to the two most logical boards here.

Announcing the opening of Travellermini.org.

Travellermini.org is a fan-based operation developing miniature figures for Traveller. Our first miniature will be the modified cout/Courier seen in the new T20 RPG. Its been too long since we Traveller players (whatever
your game and whatever your milieu) have seen support from miniatures companies. Guess its time we do something about it. Come on by, take a look, and decide for yourself. It's time we make this happen.

We look forward to seeing you at:

Your minis look good, but I would be more likely to buy the old style 15mm people minis. You can't find them anywhere. Half of mine got snaked at a convention where I was running a game of T4.

How's this going, anyway?

Further: aside from Full Thrust and the old Micro Machines Star Wars ships, what're some good Travelleresque minis? I'd like to posit some of the Battlefleet Gothic ones, even though that'd brand me a heretic...

Ral Partha DID produce a few Traveller ships back in the olden days...I have a few Gazelle Close Escort and Scout/Courier.

I really would love to have some of the smaller ships--such as the Safari ship, 600T Ad Astra liner, system defense boat, etc.

I'll watch the site, I made it a favorite site.

Ah, well, sorry to break the bad news to you Jamme and Pappy. As the site says the deal fell through and the project is dead. That was this past spring or summer and I didn't even get a reply to my last e-mail to the organizer. I bought in with much hope but sadly that was all I got and only briefly.

There was supposed to be a limited production run of the Type F (T20 Scout) for the original investors but even that seems to have been killed

The old official Traveller ship minis do come up on eBay and JTAS now and then and the last time I checked my favorite, not so local, gaming store The Sentry Box in Calgary, Alberta (CANADA) still had some in stock at very fair prices (in CA$) and with reasonable shipping. I've always had very good dealings with them over the years.

In case you have a hard time finding them I just checked out of curiosity and they seem to still have some in stock. Click the miniatures page link then selct RAFM in the side frame and scroll down to items 5802 through 5860 (includes some PC figs in 25mm)

I bought a whole pile from them. Plus I got (and I'm not saying how) a bunch of Traveller ships from the casters of the Silent Death line (some ships were repackaged, IIRC) just as they went guts up. And I think if you want to talk to the Sentry Box guys about TNE 25mm figs, they seem to have a handle on some source of supply...

Me, I'd like to get a box of old Grenadier Imperial Marines, but without having to amputate a key limb.
Ground Zero Games from the UK has some nice UNSC Marines who happen to look a lot like Battle Dress'd marines. And Dark Star (or is it Ainsty or Denizen) has some 25mm Ventaurians that look very much like Zho Combat Armour (buy the ones with helmets on - they gave them yoda-heads when the helmet is off!).

Tomb.

Too bad about the mini site. It coulda been great, and I'd've supported it if I had a job.

Do Dark Star and Ground Zero have U.S. dealers?

Don't know about Dark Star. I've dealt with their UK rep and had no problems.

As to GZG, Geo-hex, before they went out of business or changed their business model and sold bits to MKP, used to be the GZG North American distributor. That was also before Jon opened GZG on-line store. He's easy to deal with, though sometimes a bit swamped (its a one or two man operation).

Sorry about that, perhaps I should have at least READ the site before posting, huh?
We NEED minis to play with guys!!!!! :(

Ah well,
Pappy

No apology needed, I quite understand the thrill of discovery you must have been feeling and the high of anticipating some new minis. There were also some other minis in the modeling stage but I'm not sure I archived any of the pics and of course it's mostly a moot point :(

There are a couple threads around CotI about minis with links to some good substitutions for "official" products.

I know they're not in the US but I can recommend the spaceship miniatures of Brigade Models over here in Blighty. Their site is here Brigade Models. It includes pictures of nearly every model they do. Looking there they do ship to the US and the rest of the world.
I use them for playing Power Projection:Fleet along with GZG ships, which they fit in with very well.

I just spenta half hour looking and drooling. Looks like a good supply of ships for traveller.

The only issue with Brigade stuff, or with Ground Zero Games stuff (they have a lot of interesting ships too), is that they're not really on the same scale as the old traveller ships so mixing and matching can be an issue if you care about perspective for size. If you assume the actual ship is pinpoint sized so the mini is only a representation, no problemo.

And I heartily recommend Tony at Brigade or Jon at Ground Zero Games. I've dealt with both very successfully and think they are wonderful fellows.

Good morning, Guys,

Can someone point me to good minis to use for characters in a T20 game? Names of companies would be appreciated; websites even more so. I've read in this thread that there are other threads that may have talked about this kind of thing. A friendly pointer to them would also be welcomed.

Thanks in advance,
Flynn

It's a shame that the www.travellermini.org project never got off the ground.

I'm the guy who created the 3d models that were going to be used for the miniature mold masters. It seems that one of the impediments to getting the project off the ground was getting a rapid prototyping company to create 1:1 scale prototypes with the required level of detail without paying big bucks. There were some other major impediments that were business/licensing related but I wasn't dealing with that side of things.

One alternative that was never explored but recently occurred to me was to have larger scale models built, possible of resin. This would allow for larger masters to be built that wouldn't require the exacting tolerances of the original miniatures.

Anyway, if anyone has ideas about how to get rapid prototypes done with the requisite fine detail (on a budget) I'd like to hear about it. I'd love to see these things take shape some day.

BTW, here's a link to some of the concept work I did for the project. http://www.tedlindsey.com/3d/default.htm

Cool, thanks for the link Ted, I had a lot of that stashed somewhere but couldn't find it. Bittersweet to look on it again but yeah it'd be heaven to see these made, even as a limited run.

Not sure what the current state of resin molding is but it was pretty pricey last I looked (a couple years ago). Low 3 figures iirc for the mold and then a few bucks for each cast. Unless you mean something else?

Do you remember who did the alien model (I think it was a K'kree but the mind is foggy) for travellermini.org?
