Traveller Music ?

Someone may find this of interest:

Some time ago my players were transporting a rock band on a 4 system tour. On the first leg the cargo hold was only half full so I had the band members set up their equipment for a practice session. I told my players that they were woken by very loud futuristic rock music. Being a bunch of smart aleks, they wanted to know what it sounded like. Since then I have put some MP3's on my laptop as examples. So far I have:

Various classical
Hawkwind
Tangerine Dream
Pink Floyd
Motorhead
Various Japan and German Techno

In this scenario the band sounded like Motorhead.

I wonder what kind of music other races would like? This being so far in the future, I think anyones guess is going to be as good the next persons. In MTU taking a commercial shuttle down to a planet usually subjects the players to an hour of future 'elevator music'.

The Goblins
Yellow Magic Orchestra
Okinawan folk music
anything by Yoko Kanno
Can
Kraftwerk
Stockhausen
Frank Zappa (Hot Rats especially)
Barry Gray (Space 1999, Thunderbirds, et al)
John Barry
The Fall (he he he....)

all good to surprise your players with......

... oooh, and Pink Floyd suck like a snake with a milkshake

I've always been a big fan of the Sisters of Mercy...and I don't think you can do ANY gaming without the mandatory tribute to Yello's "Oh, Yeah"...it kicks off all our gaming sessions.

the Cowboy Bebop soundtrack has a pretty good variety of jazzy tunes with actual references to space and space travel in them. Granted they use jump gates so not everything applies, but even so, it's pretty good stuff.

Ah yes, the Sisters...... "Hey, now, hey, now , now...."

what about Elyzium by the Neph; probably best for modern CoC, but sublime enough for space, methinks.

Actually, almost any Japanese band will work, if you're after oddness and otherness. The Polysics, Melt Banana, The Surf Champlers...

The Ghost in the Shell: SAC soundtrack, also by Yoko Kanno, is very fine too.

Thanks for the suggestions, there are some good ones here that I had forgotten about. I don't have Yello's "Oh, Yeah" but I do have "The Race" which is just as good.

Anyone remember that version somebody did of Baa Baa Black Sheep using sampled sheep bleating? That could be Vargr feasting music.

For setting-the-mood music, Orbital rocks the house, but for the sounds of future-space, Brian Eno is my main man: the Ambient discs and Neroli sample what the Imperial nobility listens to IMTU.

On the low-tech backwater worlds, Dead Can Dance brings the noise.

So right. I can see this, no problem.

For some reason, I often think of Depeche Mode when I think about starships moving in space. Kind of a lonely techno feel I guess.

The soundtrack for that old Carl Sagan chestnut, Cosmos.

The ambient tracks provided by the designers of Eve Online.

The OST for Last Exile.

Much of the ambient stuff done for Babylon 5 by Christopher Franke.

For a somewhat stranger game, the OST for the anime FLCL is loaded with odd tracks...
