Traveller: Soundtrack

Again, apologizes in advance if this is in the wrong place,

I'm one of those people who likes to use music for games, either in or out of play,

In all the years of playing Traveller I've tried many types of music (John Williams I'm lookin at yuz) but I never found the one soundtrack that did the job just right,

Untill recently...

From the Poseidon soundtrack: (Track: The Poseidon)

This is Traveller to me,
And this track has now become the theme for my Traveller Game,

Now not everyone uses music for their games, and thats fine, each to there own, but this thread is here for those that do,

So to those people that do use music in game, post them if you've got them,
Lets hear what your Traveller game sounds like

Cyberman and Sword of Orion from Big Finish - for those corridor chases.
Arrival of an Imperial Warship - Imperial March (could there be anything else)
Spice - Dune
Several War movies have good marching songs...
I also like several things Midnight Syndicate did for darker games.
Check out the Blade Runner & Fifth Element soundtracks.

I, too, like music in the flow of game but I find many players do not get the musical cues that we as Referees lay out for them. Unless you wish to slice and dice and even have you players "miss" it, portions of a song, it is hard to introduce music into games...

One is better bet is sound effects but the albums that I want most are completely unaffordable...

Ambient Darkness, Vol. 1 & 2
Urban Darkness
Dead City
Space & Scifi Super Pack 1
Horror Super Pack 1
scroll down they are toward the bottom...

ps If there is a secret Santa out there. Thanks!

The thing there is you're looking at royalty free products. Great price if you're doing professional work or even just something you want to share with the world for free and no legal issues. But if all you're wanting is something to use in a game for mood where copyright and royalty fees are not an issue I'm sure you can find something cheaper, or free. I used to have some links to free sound effects sources but they are likely lost or invalid now. Google a bit though.

Soundtrack to The Ghost and The Darkness: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PGv__TUCaj8 captures the general feel of exotica I want, but it is limited to one particular region.

Tangerine Dream (assorted, but Stratsofear is always good when cruising the outer rim) for ambiance when in space and exploring unknown worlds. Spooky stuff mainly.

Yes, I have exhusted all the free sources...and gone through a library system CD Collection...found some things useful but others not. This one seems to have all the pips, squeeks, and other assorted things that have a professional air to them. But, it is amazing how hard it is find what you would think would be common...airlocks cycling, realistic switches, sonar scoops...these I have found but I just drool when I see what else I could add to the game...

For a Cthulhu Rising/Traveller game, I am renting out a strobe light & fog machine...I got lasers from a dollar store...I have the spooky music but just the mundane sounds, I have had to steal from submarines.

That is why one hopes for a secret Santa for that and the glow in the Q Workshop dark Cthulhu dice...

Have you done searches for "soundboard". I seem to recall finding more than a few Star Trek ones with all the computer sounds, door whooshes, tranporter noise, phaser fire and such. And other movies and TV with similar. Space 1999, UFO, others. Horror genre was covered quite well too. It was all a few years ago though. I keep meaning to make a few soundboards myself from favorite computer and console games. Lots of good sound effects in them as well.

The trick is to try to capture a vibe, a theme, of music that fits your vision of the game, and keep it as general as possible, the more you need to pin it down to a very specific situation the less useful the music,

Thats not bad, good for a jungle planet, (damn it, can't get the ewoks out of my head damn you Lucas!) being Jerry Goldsmith music is useful, his style tends to be consistent across alot of his work, which means if you use his stuff you can mix and match from different movie soundtracks and not see the join, they will tend to blend in quite nicely,

Not background but try: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C3fIu2OdWn8&feature=related
That contains an adventure hook in the song...

If you're Solomani, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Ryd_p20XEU (Which was on the NASA Challenger Memorial)

There is lots of stuff. Look up the Late Cynthia Mcquillan("Fuel to feed the Drive" comes to mind), Julia Ecklar and Leslie Fish(though they admittedly have a lot of fantasy stuff too), CJ Cherryh's songs based on her Union/Alliance/Pell and Chanurr Universes(as often sung by Mercedies Lackey, Lesly Fish et al), Kris Klover...
There are even songs by me on the Filk archive site(and one about Traveller!)

And a lot of it is freely available

Cheers Commander Truestar, they are both great, in the spirit of Firefly

For Firefly I've always thought "Behind blue eyes" by Limp Bizkit was a good match (reminds me of Mal)

MIchelle(Vixy) and Tony are both great Firefly fans. You should check out their web site as they sell CD's. I used to perform Duaine Elms' origional version of "Dawson's Christian" in sings but used Michelle's words to intorduce a ghost story and legend to my current campaign..

I've used 'O Fortuna' from the opera Carmina Burana & I've become fond of a Nox Acarna album I bought at DrivethruRpg.

For Mood Music when working on a game or the website I've ran my John Barry James Bond scores, Various Eric Korngold(which I'm listening to right now) swahbuckler scores, Cutthroat Island, Last Exile, Vangelis' Heaven & Hell, Tenchi Muyo GXP, Ghost in the Shell SAC, Mancini's score for Lifeforce-mostly for the main theme, & Vandread.

I've recently stumbled across the music of Tangerine Dream and find the sound highly evocative of the far future. I like the albums from the mid 70's. I'm listening to Phaedra and Stratosfear tonight.

For me, Tangerine Dream always brings up images of Bab5. (They did several bits for it, including the main title, Geometry of Shadows.)

Traveller, for me, is more associated with Warren Zevon, Gorky Park, and Mike Oldfield. (My more successful TNE games started session with me listening to those as people arrived; I never use music in session due to hearing issues.)
