Traveller: Soundtrack

Tangerine Dream's always reminded me of Terminator

Not to sure why, maybe they did music for a scene in the movie,

A bit too synthetic for my tastes though,

If Traveller needs a soundtrack, parts of Pirates of the Carribean along with Master & Commander soundtracks are useful. The secret with the soundtrack is to keep a consistant approach - for instance, allow the Imperium or the Zhodani appearance to always be preceeded by a particular track ie the Imperial March.

Commander Truestar, thanks for those links. I favorited both of them. "Dawson's Christian" has set my wheels spinning for a new campaign, and "Fire in the Sky" will be the anthem of my scout service.

Shonner, good call on "Sinfonia Antarctica"!

Back in the day our group, rather I should say that I always played one of the Indiana Jones movie soundtracks. Our games were high adventure, so the music was always apropos.

For me, Tangerine Dream always brings up images of Bab5. (They did several bits for it, including the main title, Geometry of Shadows.)

Traveller, for me, is more associated with Warren Zevon, Gorky Park, and Mike Oldfield. (My more successful TNE games started session with me listening to those as people arrived; I never use music in session due to hearing issues.)

I rarely use it during a game session myself, but I always have it playing in on my computer while I'm banging away at some adventure or background for my universe - it keeps me inspired and helps put me in the mood for certain aspects of my games. But then, I always listened to a lot of classical baroque when driving to a fencing tournament, too, and even after watching a LOTR for the fiftieth time it still gives me the urge to play D&D and kill me some orcs.

I remember John Williams had the scenes from Star Wars playing on a screen behind his orchestra while directing them through the music to better match it to the scene. So anyone else use that sort of technique to help write, as opposed to manage, a session of Traveller?

I often do prep with music going.

Thats done by most composers for movies,

During games, usually instrumental to avoid the interference between lyrics and talking:
Tangerine Dream; usually Stratosfear and Mars Polaris
Jean Michel Jarre; Oxygene
Mike Oldfield; usually Ommadawn, Songs of Distant Earth, and Tubular Bells
Vangelis; Spiral
Synergy; Electronic Realizations for Rock Orchestra, Sequencer, Cords, and Semi-Conductor
Rick Wakeman; White Rock and Criminal Record
Patrick Moraz; The Story of I
Tomita: Planets, Kosmos, Bermuda Triangle
Handel; Water Music, Music for Royal Fireworks
J. S. Bach; You name it
Franck; Symphony in D Major
Rimsky-Korsakov; Scheherazade
Brian Eno: Apollo, Atmospheres, soundtrack for For All Mankind

While developing adventures:
King Crimson, Rick Wakeman, Jon Anderson, Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe, Emerson Lake and Palmer, Maus, Magma, Yes, Steve Hackett, early Genesis, etc., etc.

Its like....like....Hawk the Slayer but for Traveller,

I would so play in that game,

(Hawk the Slayer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tZwc2hAcLBw)

btw didn't Lewis Collins die from lactose intolerance due to his acting?,
He kind of dropped of the radar after that er movie

I'm pretty sure he's still alive.

The film itself suffers from a lack of credibility. The writing is dreadfully poor, so it doesn't matter how well everything else is staged, it's just a lame story, ergo the B-movie grade.

I still like the music and the SAS raid scene at the end. :)

But, ARE you sure...For his acting redefines the term "le grand fromage"
in to something terrible and to be feared, :oo:

I think it suffers from alot more than that, its all bad. all the time,
Its like "Plan nine" but for the SAS

Heh, let's not stray too far from the avenue of rich space-adventure-music for our favorite RPG/wargame. ;) But...

"Who Dares Wins" is uneven in some of the performances, from what I can recall. It's a bit jingoistic too... I take that back. It's A LOT jingoistic :), but given the time it was made that's hardly a fault. The Soviet "empire" (ahem) was the threat at the time, and utilizing third party political movements were the scare for the career-paranoids in intelligence and law-enforcement circles.

I think Lewis just didn't have too much to work with in terms of performance. Special Forces of all kinds are not undercover James Bondish "secret-agents". They are soldiers trained for some highly specialized operations. Lewis' stiff cliched machismo, I think, comes from the type of film the director wanted to make.

I'll say this, I liked the performances from all the supporting cast. And if you think the acting in this film was poor (which I don't really think it was), then give "US Navy Seals" a spin on your DVD player. Now THAT movie was AWFUL! I'll take Lewis over Sheen anyday.

But, back to music, some more good Traveller music are the themes from the Ghost Recon computer game series. That's actually quality "Book 4 Mercenary" type music.

Lewis over Sheen? are you loco?

At least Sheen can act
And I have seen "US Navy Seals" and it does suck bottom, (but its far from the worst, there are far worse that shall remain nameless to protect the innocent from exposure,)

At least they didn't punch a hole through a helicopters fuel tank with their bare hands (if I remember correctly, lol) "Who Dares Wins" is just bad

Back on track.....

Yeah the music from "Ghost Recon" is good, like "Rainbow Six" another good soundtrack

Heh, I don't recall the fist in fuel tank scene.

I've seen Lewis in other stuff, and admittedly he's not an actor I'd cast. However, I do think he relishes taking on those "tough-guy" roles, and is probably oblivious to his ... how does one put it ... "over-statement" :) of the character he's playing. For a leading man he's probably a bargain compared to other actors. I'll bet thats why the producers chose him for "Who Dares Wins".

Sheen, on the other hand, I like to think KNOWS better. Unlike Lewis who is either in on the joke of his thesping, or is just truly oblivious, Sheen has a few more IQ points going for him. To me that makes his acting more criminal :)

Back on track, some other good Trav music is the Counter Strike soundtrack. The Half Life soundtrack is also pretty good, and has the advantage of being on audio CD.

I'm guessing he was choosen on the back end of the "Professionals"
And I know his portrayal in "Who Dares Wins" is not one liked by men in that service, lol

Lewis is OBLIVIOUS, have you seen him in an interview?,
But Sheen doesn't take himself too seriously, (unlike Lewis)
that makes him more forgivable, he's not pretending to be something he's not,

And "Metalgear Solid" is also good ;)

I always loved Isunova by E. S. Posthumus ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Qt8jrY8rGQ - if Youtube does not kill it again). I could easily imagine very dramatic, epic Traveller scenes in space here. More can be found at ( http://www.esposthumus.com/ )

X-Ray Dog has some distinct soundtracks, too. You might have heard music of them despite knowing about it - they create the music used for trailers before the actual soundtrack is done. ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X-Ray_Dog - and Youtube, of course)

And the music to the X-series games, especially X3 Reunion: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=--OZa5x0tlM - also look for the 'Peace (number)' tracks if You need something more spheric and soothing.

EVE Online does have some nice tracks, too: http://www.eveonline.com/download/music/

The X3 Reunion was nice, (some of those ship in the video are also cool, but I'm guessing not from the game right?, unless they have star furies)

You may like this, Gears of War 2 - Main Theme (scored by the same guy who did both of the Transformer movies, Steve Jablonsky)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zQ_5I66xzsw&feature=related

Imagine finding a space derelict a massive ship lost long ago,
you and your crew discover it, board and find no signs of life, no bodies, nothing, you try to bring the systems back on line.........

but something stalks the ship
