Traveller's Safari Ship based on....

OK, this is buggin' me. Traveller's Animal Class Safari Ship. What TV show was that ship's design based on?

There was a 60's or 70's era TV show that featured that ship. I used to have the model when I was a kid. You could take the top off the model and see inside.

The ship was a flying manta-ray-like submarine. In the opening titles of the show, the Safari ship would come flying and plow into the waves, operating as a sub.

Anybody remember that TV show?

Found it!

City Beneath the Sea. It was a movie and then a short lived TV show.

You can see the first 10 minutes of the movie (with the Safai Class Ship diving into the water), HERE.

S4,

City Beneath the Sea for the win!

It also looks a great deal like the "suborbital passenger rocket" from the Land of the Giants television show.

Have fun,
Bill

Nope. Check out the clip in the movie City Beneath The Sea that I posted above. The Safari Ship is almost an exact duplicate.

Neat Note: Both Voyage To The Bottom of the Sea and City Beneath the Sea were produced by Irwin Allen (yep, the disaster flick guy of the Towering Inferno and Earthquake, et. al.). So, many of the props used in Voyage were also used in the short lived TV series of City.

But, check out the Safari Ship. It's the same ship. Although, in City, it's more of an air-transport/submarine combo.

And a lot smaller than the Safari Ship, more launch size than ship size.

And wasn't everything on TV at that time an Irwin Allen production :D

Sure, but check out the design! Obviously, whoever drew the original Safari Ship was in love with that mini-sub.

I expect you're right S4 :D I'd just never made the connection until you asked and had pretty much forgotten about the mini-sub. Don't think it was much used in VBS.
