traversing a doorway

Do the doors, especially iris valves, in your campaign open automatically (ala Star Trek) or require an input from someone going through?

Do they go "whoosh" when they open and close? :D

Or have you never given it a thought?

I never gave it a thought until someone posted a systems malfunction table (due to lack of maintenance) and one of the things I thought of would be a malfunctioning automatic door or iris valve.

ISTR descriptions of sliding doors and iris valves being able to open automatically when people move towards them. Maybe in MT? SSOM?

given it a lot of thought. imtu iris valves are used for damage control/isolation, and where military space considerations require no manual hatch be in the way. other than that it's manual hatches all the way, double hatches between inhabited space and vaccuum one of which is manual.

Doors - sliding, can be set to automatic or manual.
Iris valves - manual or automatic, crew preference; computer control override for damage control
Hatches -usually manual, some luxury ships fitted with computer controlled closing mechanism.

The computer control is necessary for when the big bad takes control of the ship...

I like the ones that go "Sshhh!" (a la Airplane II). ;)
IMTU we don't use iris doors. They are more like hatches on surface naval ships or subs, where a wheel is turned to unlock and open it. Why make things too easy for PCs?

In general I have always taken my cue from the door rules in Snapshot and AHL. i.e. Button activated.

That's how I would do it - button-operated with voice-activation capability.

The latter would have a specific opening word and a different closing word. This would include voice-print verification, and the button would include fingerprint verification.

For operation with the crew in vacc suits there would be a link to the suit's built-in IFF to confirm the code-word.

I got a Star Trek style "comm panel" that mounts on the wall next to a door as a gift a few years ago. It has a motion sensor and makes a "Whoosh" (or "Red Alert", way too loud) sound when someone comes through the door. I thought it would be handy for my home office/work area to let me know when someone was coming in, but it got very annoying and is set to silent mode now.
