Underpowered/Over-Sized Standard Ship Designs

I've been looking closer at some of the Standard Ship designs in the Traveller's Handbook, and it seems that the designs which do not have weapons included in the standard price are usually underpowered and over sized once weapons are added.

The designs without included weapons tend to have power plants which are just enough for the maneuver drive and jump drives, but make no energy requirement provisions for adding lasers as armament. As a result, the ships can only fire lasers if no maneuvering is done, and, in some casees, the ships can mount more lasers than they can fire.

The designs also tend to not allocate space for turrets even though hardpoints and sometimes turrets are specified. As a result, a ship with weapons added will be over the nominal hull size.

How are other people handling these omissions? My first temptation is to basically ignore them for standard designs and assume that the ships can power any mounted lasers and that turrets with weapons don't take up the additional space.

Hello Ron Vutpakdi,

There are a few little problems with various portions of the THB. Which are being, at least I hope they are, addressed on the errata discussion board. My advice is to make any adjusts necessary to make a more balanced standard design. Additionally, post your findings and corrections on the errata board so that the authors can have the option of making corrections.

On another note, even the vessels in the other Traveller formats trade offs between weapons, armor, cargo, jump range, and maneuverability have affected the power plant. In many cases a merchant capable of mounting turret weapons might not have anything in the turrets.

Sorry not to be more helpful, but I am still waiting on comments from two individuals on my Computer Design Sequence (CDS) example. IF they can design a computer from the core to the terminals then I may submit the document to CotI. After, I get my spreadsheet for the working better, I'll move on to the other two design sequences.

BTW Thomas, I'm still waiting for the spreadsheets ;)

Are ya now, Here I've been thinking that your system was still not playing nice. Okay, I'll be sending the spreadsheet via Outlook Express in a couple of minutes. How was the CDS document I sent, were you able to manually design a complete computer?

The E-mail was sent a 1916 hrs PST.

Thanks for the reminder.

Got the forms, got the last e-mail.

I didn't have time to design a complete computer since I've spent time on many other things (an ongoing MAGE campaign and the building of my first T20 characters for my group)

I've also been fiddling with Acrobat (got a copy at work on my laptop) and may end up spicing up your PDF forms it they work great ;)

So the Ship can not operate maneuver drives and laser weapons at the same time? The question is how long does it take to fire a laser weapon? Could you shut off the maneuver drive long enough to fire a laser and then turn them back on? You won't need to fire the laser when the Jump Drive is on since there is nothing in Jump space to shoot at.
