Wanted: Homes of the Far Future

I had to augment my home network with an Ethernet over Power solution. My Apple TV was just getting a crummy wifi connection compared to everything else. So I got this thing that runs ethernet over a power line, plugged it it, and it Just Worked. Pretty happy with it.

It potentially exposes your wired net to your neighbors...

Note that some ISP's have delivered broadband over electric. (Read about it in Wired and in Datamation back in 1998.)

Apart from issues with mobility, wired ethernet is really the best way to do this sort of connectivity. However, you do have to wire your place up and my old 3COM gigabit switch had an awfully noisy fan (although it wasn't the noisiest piece of kit in my house at the zenith of my geekdom).

Well, heck, they can have my traffic.

But, and I don't know specifically about the units I use, they were given to me by a friend, but apparently the modern plugs are running encrypted out of the box.

Honestly I think I'm more at risk of Black hat hackers convincing the cats of opening the door.

My network is DSL, I don't know it it's encrypted to the switch or not, vs having them just tap the line at the pole.
