web comics

Hey, I haven't been here in a while. Just figured I'd stop in and say hi.
Any way, web comics, a bit of a hobby of mine. My own web comic should be up by christmas, fingers crossed.
Here is a handful I've found that make good references for Traveller. I only read web comics with good to excellent art work so you needn't worry about that.

Perfect depiction of a Vargr, though not the main character but that's alright.

Interesting setting, would make a perfect world for several campaigns.

Because I promised Mindy I would advertise her sight. Don't worry it's good. I wouldn't read it if it wasn't. Well maybe I would. ;)

Great reverence for anyone playing a barbarian and a good read for the rest of us. This one has been updated one to three or more times a week since April 2000.

Updated once in a blue moon but it's worth it. Great depiction of starships and nice use of color.

Another interesting setting and perfect Traveller world. Interesting use of Psionics. (Psi cats have appeared in my campaigns) And the coloring is simply beautiful.

Feel free to post a comment but it might be a while before drop by again. Probably to promote my own websight. :D

I don't think it's particularly "Traveller" (unless "Traveller" is "any interstellar scifi" nowadays) but this one does look pretty neat
.

I was browsing the WoS site, and looking at his tutorials I realised something - the guy behind it is Jim Francis, listed as James William Francis in the art credits of the BESM roleplaying game. I recognised the "kimono girl" in the tutorial, it appeared in the BESM 2e corebook.

Then there's Mark 'Indy' Harrison's Travellers strips from White Dwarf which have just recently been coloured and made available online - sadly I can't find the link... Anyone?

I agree, WoS has got a solid look, and good use of perspective and composition. That Tierinu one looks too "cutesy " for my taste, too soft.
Did you read it? The main character is cold, bitter, quick tempered and sharp tongued. Where do you get cutesy soft from?

Oh no! The Anime invasion why can't anyone do it like Mike Marchi ...ok, the artwork is cheesy but the attempt is there at a realistic Traveller universe!

I did notice the animeness of these comics... (plus the tendency to turn any animal-like humanoid into a cute-looking furry, bleargh).

I'd much rather see something done for Traveller that's more like your typical Marvel/DC/Vertigo comic, but with less spandex.

But I'd still prefer it to Mike Marchi's artwork ;) .

What to say about Mike Marchi ?
Well I’ve seen worse. His human figures are horrible but his structural drawing is not bad. The ships and buildings are pretty accurate, but they could use a bit more rendering.

I’m sorry to say it, but I doubt that’ll happen. Comics with that degree of quality are just not practical for web comics. Remember that web comics produce a page a week on average. Although a professional could match that speed (after several years of practice) it’s a lot of work and they are getting paid for that, artist gota eat.
Most web comics are done by amateurs, and so not very good. Most of the good ones are done by college students (soon to be professionals). As far as I know very few are done by professional artists though that will probably change when the students start graduating. Even then the comics will retain their graphic quick draw style so the artist can focus on his/her commissioned work. The artist gota eat.

Well, I was wishfully thinking there ;) .

Still ARE there any Marvel/Dc/Vertigo/etc comics that are similar to Traveller? There's surely some scifi ones out there (probably miniseries?).

Zanrain, thanks for the link to the Well of Souls/Outsider web comic. I had stumbled on it some time ago, but forgot to bookmark it and couldn't find it again (fool me). Now I have. Thanks!

"Still ARE there any Marvel/Dc/Vertigo/etc comics that are similar to Traveller? There's surely some scifi ones out there (probably miniseries?)."

Can't think of any (apart from Trek/SW/Alien/Predator ones). A bit strange, now you come to mention it.

The only non-franchise, non-superhero "sci-fi" comic book I ever remember seeing or reading was "Alien Legion" published by Marvel comics. It was a "Foreign Legion in Outer Space" type concept.

<Quick Google search ...>

Well, how about that? Apparently someone tried to make an animated series based on the comic book. I don't ever remember seeing that ...

[Edit:]
Oh, and for those that care, Alien Legion was not anime in any way. The book was draw in "normal" comic style.

For currently available the Seikai Trilogy is a bit more Star Trek than Traveller but it should be available in most book stores. Better known as Crest of the Stars and Banner of the Stars from the anime series shown on TechTv.

While they're more 2300/2320AD than Traveller there's Planetes from Tokyopop and Viz might still have some copies of the 2001 Nights collections.

Planetary has had some issues in space. Ok it's not Traveller's OTU by any means but it is Warren Ellis goodness.

It'd be great if there was a series from the major American publishers but I can't think of any at the moment. There's likely some independent, check Diamond Previews etc. if you get the chance.

I've got (and love) 2001 Nights, but that sure isn't anything remotely like Traveller. If it's similar to anything, it's much more like 2300AD in feel.

Yep, that's how far I had to reach to even get close to Traveller in comics. :(

Crest/Banner of the Stars is kinda like "Sword Worlder Prisoner Noble Adventures in the Darrian Space Navy" at least. ;)
