What about GRIP??

Hi,

been lurking a while here. I am very interested in using GRIP as I am moving to the UK in a month (I'm from Sweden), but I am wondering is it still alive?

Anyone using it?

I have downloaded the trial, but I have trouble getting up and running, the help files are not very exhaustive I think.

Any advice?

thanks

Nils

I must say that while I own it I found it wasn't the most stable. Unfortunately support for it has completely dried up as well. The character sheet aspect was very configurable and worked really well, which is a shame. I've since switched to Klooge myself, an application that is heavyily supported with fixes and updates coming out quite regularly.

I found that for the money regular IRC worked just as well. It's more stable, cheaper (free clients), and pretty much any computer that can access the internet can use it. There's been no update on Grip that I can tell for a good while now and questions about it here go unanswered by TPTB.

I don't need a map for online play and character sheets, adventure writeups, etc. I can do using other programs I have already (word processor, spreadsheets, graphics programs, etc.). IM (instant messenger) clients also work, esp. for sending updated files and are again available for free and for most computers (though not as many as IRC) out there.

I did try out Klooge and Screenmonkey as well. Both worked fairly well and either would come in handy if I did need a map in use during play. Screenmonkey needed the least amount of extra setup but used browser refresh for updates which got annoying. Click, click, click every x seconds. There's a free lite version of Screenmonkey out now fwiw.

HTH.

Casey,
If you use Opera as your browser, you can tell it to automatically reload the browser every so often. (From 5 sec. to 30 min.) Of course, I don't know if Screenmonkey (or any of these others) needs ActiveX to work; that would be a problem in Opera.

Thanks though that's the problem actually. Screenmonkey was refreshing every x seconds distracting me by sight and sound. While Screenmonkey was ok I don't need a map update like that for the online games I'm in and never bought the full product nor tried the lite version which came out after my test of the product.

Thanks for your replies. I have joined the Griplist so I can get help from the guys there. Although I must say Klooge looks pretty interesting too.

Thanks! This pretty much answered whether I wanted to get GRIP TE or just Traveller, $35 for something that's not well supported isn't worth it to me.
