Especially if it's that exotic hardwood from St. Johns Wort VI, known for it's high G, the wood is as dense as synthetic quartz but, being fundamentally fibrous, torsionally very strong so as not to be brittle.
Of course, it's a real pain to cut, but finishes nicely. Doesn't stain very well, though, but will take a couple of coats of poly. Not that you need it to actually protect the wood.

Yes, but there's no guarantee it's subject to magnetic attraction... you really don't want to hit a patch of diamagnetic metal and thre resulting being forced off the wall during free fall..
